Until I became a teacher I never had sick days, you called in sick you didn't get paid. Do it too often and you got fired. These were union jobs. In the 1970's.

I have 15 days a year of paid vacation not including company holidays. No sick days.
I'm also salaried though, so it's at the discretion of my employer if I need to leave early or come in late. And it's not so much a "standard" as it is the difference between hourly and salaried when it comes to being paid for 8 hours straight.
How much vacation time do you have in addition to the sick days? Ours is lumped together so it is difficult to compare. My complaint is that we are required to keep a minimum of 3 days worth unused. It took me almost 3 months just to earn that much, then it felt like starting back at zero because I couldn't take any.

What does this mean? " . . . use it wisely." As opposed to using it to go to Disneyland?

We have Personal Time Off (PTO) that can be used for illness or vacation, and we get a day per pay period, 24 days a year. In addition, we get sick leave that can only be used when off 3days or more (with doctor verification), or if hospitalized. That's earned at 4 hours per pay period (12 days a year). I personally have used PTO to stay home sick one day in 4 years, and have about 400 hours (about 50 days) saved even with some vacations taken. We are also allowed to sell excess PTO back as long as we don't fall below 40 hours.
Well in my old job I had 13 sick days per year, 3 weeks vacation, 10 holidays.
My new Job I only accrue 4 hours sick or personal time per month (6 days per year), 3 weeks vacation after your first year(nothing the 1st year) 10 holidays and 1 floating holiday.
Honestly its hard adjusting to only 6 days per year sick especially when you have kids and you work 8-5 and cannot get appointments before/after work hours because the doctor/dental/etc offices are closed.
If you get really sick one year, you could easily use it up in one shot.
I am not salaried so if I deviate from my 8-5 shift, I am required to use my personal/sick time.
I am salaried and I technically have "unlimited" sick time, but I'm sure at some point I would be talked to about it.
I've never taken a sick day my whole time with the company. I usually try to work sick, but since everyone else takes their sick time when they are sick I am reevaluating that "ideal".

So you get 4 hours a month soooo 48 hours of sick pay every year. Sick pay usually rolls over. So you get a week and 1 day of being paid for being sick. Seriously....complain much? That is good, most people don't need over a week (40 hrs) plus a day ( 8 hrs) every year to be sick. Give me a break.
