Wondering what the town of Franklin, NC is like (apologies if I should post elsewhere, my first post!). We love Brevard, Saluda, Black Mountain, Cashiers vibe....anything like those towns? Nearest bigger town? Is Franklin artsy? Just starting to research, so any info would be wonderful. Thank you!!!
Franklin has about 4,000 people and is located in a pretty, but remote area. The closest large city would be Asheville, about an hour and 15 minutes away. For the most part, it is really not similar to any of the places you mentioned. Brevard as well as Black Mountain are both a good bit larger, more vibrant and more conveniently located. Saluda and Cashiers are much smaller. Cashiers is also remote, and many homes there are second and third homes. Saluda is a quaint little town, conveniently located fairly close to Hendersonville but very small. Franklin, artsy? Relative to Asheville, no. It’s primarily known for gem mining, and being close to waterfalls. If you’re looking for a remote, small town near mountains and waterfalls, then you might consider it. I, personally, would rank all of the other places you mentioned ahead of Franklin, but would only consider Cashiers for a second home.
Thanks Liz. In doing the wee bit of research I have (just starting), I got the same impression regarding Cashiers and also that Franklin was remote but offered many outdoor opportunities, which we love. Asheville is a quirky city, which we love some of the vibe, but not a place we would visit much, except with visitors who wanted the experience. We are country folks and like rural. That said, Brevard and Pisgah Forest are so very appealing, but likely too hot a market for us. We will see! Thanks again!

Considering your ‘rural’ comment, perhaps it would be a good fit. Don’t know your employment status, but would not think it would be a good fit for most retirees. Relative to the other areas you mentioned, I would think the cost of living, including real estate prices might be a tad cheaper there. And yes, Franklin is conveniently located close to outdoor actvities, such as hiking.
We are both retired several years. He is 62, I am turning 60 in February. We garden, bicycle, he loves having a wood lot to harvest, I am avid reader and short distance runner, like yin yoga and fitness classes, we like seeking waterfalls and smaller hikes these days. Kids and our one grandson all live in other states. We did like traveling a bit. Grew up in rural Maine (me), he grew up in farming end of Long Island (rural). I raised my daughter in Vermont in a town of roughly 2000 under the mountain. We like a small community, tho I do appreciate the convenience of a bigger place. It would be nice to have a Lowe's within a half hour or so and a health food market (tho that is more for the vibe, we rarely go to one lol). Appreciate your replies!
Based on your comments, I gather you have visited the other places you mentioned in your original post? If you have not visited Franklin, I suggest you make a trip down, stay at a VRBO, and scope it out. It may well fit your needs.

Yes, we have visited them all, except Franklin, over the past year or so. We just got back Wednesday from our latest trip. It will actually be a trip up, we have been in northeast Florida near my folks for the past 6 years and putting our house on the market shortly. Definitely not our cup of tea here....or rather mine...my husband is more flexible than me and less prone to dislike extreme temperatures.

Hi Eliza, as someone who has scoured the WNC area for places to retire/live next if looking for "artsy" would not recommend Franklin. That area of the state is largely FL retirees with quite frankly not a lot interests other than budget living. If looking for a more artsy vibe with things to do and more affordable homes I'd recommend towns like Burnsville, Spruce Pine or Sylva. If you don't have to be right in the mountains but close, check out Rutherfordton and Marion.

Thanks so much for your feedback. We are heading back to WNC this weekend to spend some more time checking out towns. Appreciate the input!!
Sylva is not far from Franklin and Dillsboro is right next to Sylva so you could check out both. Try the Haywood Smokehouse in Dillsboro if you get there.
