That's awesome! You travelled much?
Nope. As we have a conscription-based army, mostly hardened professionals and specialists travel. Some went to Sweden and some sailed to the Canary Islands, but I was stayed put.

What's the conscript : professional ratio in the Finnish military? Regarding conscription, I always wondered what use the military has in a peacetime situation for loads of inexperienced people who don't necessarily want to be there or have much aptitude for military life, or is the point of conscription just that you all get trained in case something big happens?

The percentage of professionals is around 5%. Pilots, navy specialists and so on are professional, but mostly restricted to special fields. Even tank crew, combat divers, airborne troops, battlefield doctors etc are conscripts. The motivation is a problem for some, but as we saw in the last wars, a conscription-based army can be very successful. I don't know in a real situation, but many NATO officers have praised the Finnish military of being very professional despite being a conscription one.

The point is naturally that the border with Russia is 1000 km long, and it takes a lot of men to defend it. That's the reality we have to cope with. I believe Finland also has the largest field artillery in Western Europe.

Would you liked to have travelled with the forces given the opportunity?

I've been to so many amazing, and thankfully much less, horrific places with the Navy. I've seen a lot of things that will live with me for the rest of my life. Some things I'd rather forget, but that's the way it is unfortunately.

Someone like owen could do with some military training. He certainly needs the discipline.

Oh no, don't get me wrong. I was just a lousy conscript serving for a year, and never really given that opportunity. Serving abroad would've meant signing up for 1-5 years, and though I considered that, it never came to reality. A friend of mine served as a peace-keeper in Bosnia, and although he praised the opportunity, it wasn't as great as he thought it would be.

But looking backwards, a guaranteed post abroad would've probably turned the scales towards signing up.
