Pretty rare though. Lows below -10c are not unheard of, but such cold usually means relatively large diurnal range, so high closer to -2c.

I guess it should be quite similar here, at least for the last 30 years.

When I lived in Toronto, there were a few times when the max was around -25c. It was starting to feel quite chilly.
If you were around in the 80s (you're in your thirties right?), you've experienced highs below -10°C. Jan 1987 had one and Jan 1985 three of them. You weren't born then, but Feb 1929 and 1956 had the coldest highs in Lyon (respectively -13.4°C/7.9°F and -12.7°C/9.1°F).

Even Marseille airport had a -10°C/14°F high back in February 1956!

The coldest I've experienced was around -15°C/5°F in the Jura highlands in Feb 2005. The wind was fierce that day.

Bristol TN - January 21, 1985 - record low of -21° officially at the airport.

It has been no where near that cold again until February of this year. Offically at the airport only hit a high of 12° on February 19th (the average was 51°!!!) and the low was 0° (average low was 29°!). The high was 17° colder than the average low for the date and I have never seen our high temperature that low before, never and I have lived here nearly 40 years. The low that night dropped to a record shattering -13°, the coldest it had been here in decades and the low was nearly 50° BELOW the average low for the date. We had a rapid warm-up the next day when the high hit 43°, which was still 10° below average. It was amazing. Somehow my Southern Live Oaks and Needle Palms have survived. It was a rough winter (at least February) here in the southeast.

Since then it was a mild March and April... temperatures fairly seasonal on average. We are in a cool snap again now however, at least for the next few days, but nice to see all of the trees green now and full of leaves.

Lowest high during my life was 14F (-10C) last January.

I think it's amazing that Tennessee (and the rest of the upper SE) is capable of these kinds of temps. The record low for Knoxville is -31C (-24F) on Jan 21, 1985. I experienced that sort of cold in January 2015, up in the mountains of upstate NY, and I can't even remotely imagine how that is possible in subtropical TN at 35N (it's not even at high elevation).

I guess you weren't around in 1950?

That year saw an insane trough over the PNW, and Seattle had an absurd January.
SeaTac hit a whopping 0F at the end of the month, and had a high of 16F (-9C) on Jan 14.

The thread is about what we have seen/experienced (I think), not what the record is.

Coldest high i have personally seen is -11°C on 2nd January 1997.
That was a clear and crisp day with low humidity and a solid snowcover and only very light eastern winds.
Felt great.

Absolute lowest record high is -13.1°C on 1st February 1956- that was wayyyyyy before my time.

Coldest High I have seen at my home is 46F on Jan 10 2010 coldest ever was low 40's Christmas eve 1989 (before my time). As a side note Jan 9 2010 had a high of 50-something at midnight before falling to the upper 30s-Low 40s in early afternoon with rain. Jan 10 2010 was also the last time I recorded a freeze (low of 32F) at my home.
