You are so right, the jetstream is major. Those Canadian Clippers, where the jetstream dips can send the upper midwest into a major deep freeze!
On the other hand, if it doesn't get cold, lake doesn't freeze, we stay warmer. The lake refrigerates us in the spring/summer, but we're the last to get frost in the fall because of the lake still being warm.
Here in the UK the jetstream is often diving well south of us even in summer which is why we can have all day frontal rain with sub-50°F temperatures all day in June.

That happens in the US in winter, such that places like Charleston, SC at latitude 32.7 can have a high temp below freezing (on average once every four years or so).
(central Minnesota )......I can't remeber all the cold high temps, but one stands out cuz it was Christmas Eve ( 1983)
After a whole week of very cold weather ( records being set many days) it was just a matter of time before things would go wrong on the dairy farm ( machinery break, insulated water pipes freeze, etc)
Christmas Eve day, it all started happening.
At 2PM the barn radio said it was -15 with a wind chill of -65.
Absolutely the worst Christmas memory of my entire life.
( the extreme cold snap lasted a few more days before it got to normal )
That was before the wind chill calculations were redone. That -65 windchill using today's formula would probaly be only -55 or -45.Most likely -45. Wind Chills in the US rarely deviate by 40 degrees let alone 50 degrees.
Coldest highs I've ever experienced was probably around low to mid 10s in Fahrenheit.
In my current city(Fayetteville, NC) it was high 20s in Fahrenheit.
