Look how much below average temps will be next week here. Nice way to start Spring, with below zero temps

Might touch 50 degrees in parts of the area Saturday with rain before the bottom drops

And it seems like the bottom will drop. Will it get down to -10F in some of the outlying western suburbs of Chicago on March 4th? Too soon to tell.

Last time it got down to 0F at ORD in March was March 6th 2015. Got down to -2F at ORD March 3rd 2014. Both those months ended up well below average

Yosemite National Park reported yesterday it has received over 174 inches of snow in February alone at the Tuolumne Meadows ranger station, breaking the record for most February snowfall ever. And the month is just 21 days old!

Wrong. The arctic has the worst mosquitoes in the summer. So winter isn't killing squat off.

Dry heat is what kills off insects. In California during the summer there are no mosquitoes whatsoever.

It's not how cold the winter is, it's how dry the summer is that kills insects off.

No he's not wrong. Moderate to extreme cold is known to taper off populations of certain insects.

Latest model runs suggest a remote chance of t-storms on Sunday for parts of Southern Ontario owing to elevated CAPE values.

Mountain pine beetle in particular is sensitive to the cold. Its range is from Mexico to central British Columbia. Temperatures down to -20C can actually kill it if they come in the fall or spring, when the insects are active. In the winter when they’re inactive, temperatures approaching -40C are necessary to kill them.

Lots of snow means replenished water reservoirs out west. Also means a lush spring... Could mean a BIG fire season later this summer if rains don't keep coming.

The lack of extreme cold over the past two decades has allowed it to flourish in BC forests. Large swaths of forest are now tainted red due to a massive dieoff.
