Daily low-temperature records were also broken on Monday (new record is in parentheses) in Butte, Montana (24 degrees below zero); Casper, Wyoming (21 degrees below zero); Redding, California (25 degrees, tied); and Sacramento, California (29 degrees). A record-cold high temperature was also set on Monday in Billings, Montana (3 degrees)
That seems to be the way it works. With upper levels digging down to our west and ridged up over us it's no wonder we are breaking heat records and they are getting a late taste of winter. I wanna see a flip flop on the upper levels and see a cold March and a wet March for my area.
Dont know whats going on there maybe the sun? but yes, its on the extreme end at 850mb. Not extreme because there were few colder times but -10C is on that side of the extreme spectrum. See this mornings posts for proof.
As far as the surface... i am seeing record cold across the West. There's always going to be locations that dont break...doesnt mean its not an arctic/extreme airmass "aloft".. you know?
Just saw that. Thanks. Yeah, that'll do it! Pretty rapid.
Last one.. Lets use the 925mb temp air mass now.. (2500')... For Oregon... Has it been colder? Of course.. But what side of the extreme is it on and how low is it?
How about we agree to call it impressive instead of Extreme. I think It's not often the PacNW gets an airmass this cold. Right?
BTW -- These are actual observations, not model forecasts.
The numbers speak for themselves. I guess this is pretty impressive for Oregon.
I should have specified SW BC in my post. Most winters do usually break -10C for 850mb temps here. As previously mentioned, it is not as common these days (post 2000) as it was before. However, it is by no means extreme. Something extreme would be sub -20C 850mb temps which we've only seen a few times before(Jan 1950 and '69).
I suppose the thing that gets me is that I constantly see the east smashing cold records dating back over a century and I think that's possible here. For example, Toronto's coldest month on record was just set in Feb 2015; something equivalent to that would be Vancouver breaking Jan 1950's record.
Today's high at LEX was 80°F. Ties the monthly record.
Louisville set a new February record high for the second consecutive year. Hit 82°F there!
Warmer climate, horrible trends, and allergies in February. Guess I have to move 1500 miles further north again.
