I predict that this winter will be one of the warmest on record for the Eastern U.S.
I also predict that, after a stretch of positive temperature anomalies of ten to thirty degrees lasting over a month, there will be a single "cold" shot that will have numerous personalities on this forum complaining about North America's "frigid" winters. They will experience severe amnesia regarding the record-obliterating warmth that just transpired, and will continue to ignore such warmth when it returns.
It's a reasonable prediction based on the past two winters.

I doubt that, as you guys (east of Rockies) had a record warm winter last year. No way it happens twice in a row, especially based on the current long range forecasts.

I don't know about the US, but there is high probability the coming boreal winter may be the coldest since modern record keeping.
(2014 was the coldest December -March ever recorded for the region around the Great Lakes)
Even with the recent "warm" winters, the 30 trend for the US shows up, and this would lead to the high possibility that the coming winters are going to trend even colder. (or at least pretty cold)
The cooling boreal winter trend is centered around February, so it shows up in both the winter and first quarter trend.
I hope to God that the winter of 2017-2018 isn’t a repeat of the winter of 2013-2014.…or worse than the winter of 2013-2014, because at least all of the snow in the winter of 2013-2014 in Indianapolis made the intense cold easier to deal with..........there’s nothing that could possibly be worse than an extremely cold winter without much snow or ice IMHO.......

For most of the NH, extreme cold is always associated with a lot of snow. Warm or mild winters are dry, or mostly rainy.
