But you've had really mild winters each year since 2012. Even this year the Polar Vortex danced around you, it went to East Asia, Eastern Europe, Eastern US, but for the past few years it always goes avoids Western Europe and Western US. Nights in Stoke have not been cold and rainy in quite a while
Winter 12/13 was below average, 14/15 was average. Only 13/14 and this current winter have been mild. I don't live in Stoke.

In New York it's been quite bad these last few years, we've had below average February and March every year since 2012, and to add insult to injury, 14 and 15 they've been historically cold. March in 2014 and 2015 are both like in the Top-Five coldest on record I believe, while February 2015 was the coldest Feb on record by far, and the second coldest month ever overall

I have a feeling that spring will show up earlier this year. Last two years it was literally in the last two weeks of classes that we had consistent warmth, now let's hope it will be in April!

I'm actually in Manchester at the moment for a friends birthday, and went through Stoke on the train. I've never seen such a depressing place in my life, it looked like some Siberian gulag.
Been here since Friday and haven't seen the sun since I left London. It rained non stop Friday evening and all of Saturday too. If people base their stereotype on visiting Manchester, then it's totally justified. It has rained every time I've ever been here.

When I was at school, I'd go with a mate to stay at his aunties house in Blackley, Manchester, for a week during the summer holidays, and it always seemed to be raining! I don't think Manchester is actually that wet, but like you, it seems to rain every time I visit.
And yes, Stoke is a ****hole. We use to get the train to Stoke on our way to Alton Towers. Grim place indeed.
Using JUST the ENSO status (there's a whole lot more to the puzzle as we know), here are the Spring Temp departures for the years that we went from a Strong or Moderate Nino to a weak Nino or Neutral in the Spring.
I think it will just be a weak El Nino in the Spring but I added the Neutral status as well since it can happen very fast like some years listed here..

Northeast looks Normal or Below 9 out of the 10 times.
2010 is interesting how it stands out but does fit into the scenario. It was a moderate Nino winter 2009-10 then Spring it was a weak Nino then by June it was a Neutral and they officially called it the End of El Nino in June.
The Blend of all those years.
So on average practically the entire U.S is cooler when we come from a Strong or Moderate Nino and are in a Weak Nino - Neutral ENSO for Spring
Edit: Don't forget! Each year is a blend of the 3 months. So even a cool year it doesn't mean you cant have a torching week or month. You would have to check each individual months for those years.
