PacNW below normal, Northeast Above normal.

What's this........ cant be........ I'm not familiar with these numbers...... 70s? I don't get it. I thought the max temp was only 50s,60s and 80s,90s

This was the OBS sheet from 4pm yesterday. Check out the Heat Index for Hartford. Felt like 98°F(37C)

Here's part of the reason Northeast was hotter than other parts of the Eastern U.S (aside from the ridge axis tilting towards us)

Precip departure last 30 days. It's much drier in this region

Last 60 days

Percent from normal last 30 days

So dry soil and a flow from the South & the Atlantic = TORCH AND HUMID!

Lose Lose situation. Climate Fail

National Weather Service Taunton MA
700 AM EDT SUN MAY 29 2016

***Large high temperature range today from the mid to upper 60s
across northeast MA to perhaps the lower 90s in the lower CT
River valley***

***Hit and miss showers/t-storms will be confined to portions of the
interior this afternoon and especially across western MA***

7 AM Update...Not much change from the 4 AM forecast. The back
door front remains roughly across central Massachusetts at this
time. Low clouds have pushed into much of eastern and central
Massachusetts. While low sun angle at this hour makes it difficult
to make out the thickness of the clouds on the satellite, believe
there will be some erosion of the low clouds at the edges at
least. Made minor updates to the sky cover and temperature
forecasts. Otherwise, the forecast is on track.

Back door cold front has already slipped into north central and
northeastern MA very early this morning. This front will continue
to push southwest this morning, but lose its punch and even start
to washout across the interior this afternoon.

A scattered to broken deck of low clouds will overspread a good
portion of our region this morning, especially in northeast MA.
Should see this batch of low clouds begin to erode from southwest to
northeast during the afternoon under the strong late May sun angle.
The result will be a large range in afternoon high temps.

For Newark its the 7th highest max for May.

For Hartford..

Out of 111 years ONLY 4 had more 90s than this year for May.

So it doesn't get into the 90s more than once in May too often.

In fact 58 years it never hit 90 in May

On paper May 2016 will now be a normal month when reality it was mostly cold May

This year... after a long stretch of warmth, makes you think "we're in a warm pattern, no cold around". Arctic blast comes. After a lot of cold, hot blast comes in.

Possible thunderstorms could make the day more interesting. House doesn't feel hot this morning, pleasant temperatures outside. Big diurnal range in recent days, though 25°F isn't that big compared to some previous days

HRRR model says all 90s again today.

Might as well go for the extreme number of 90s for May.
