I just investigated and most of the 80s here were about average, the beginning was cold and the end was warm
Not here. Only two Jan months between 1980 and 1989 were above average: 1983 and 1989. Not to mention 1977, 1978, mean were below avg, and jan 1979 was barely average. There is no disputing the 80's were a cold decade in the eastern US.

I did some research and discovered that the cold epoch was from 1975 to 1982. Late 70s in particular were the worst period, 80s were just consistently average, maybe a bit below average. Maybe the Southeast got more affected by the cold than the Northeast in the 80s

Not so much for the Midwest. The 1960's and 1970's were colder.
