All countries are fiercely protective of their interests. The US more than most. Everything Russia does is obviously to put Russia at an advantage. Russia has strategic reasons for wanting influence in Syria - like the US has strategic reasons for wanting to retain influence in Turkey and Saudi Arabia (much to out disdain I'm sure).. I'm not sure they're doing it out of the goodness of their cold Russki hearts. Putin is a politician.
But Putin does at least love his country in a way that you couldn't say about Obama or Cameron; these two just being career liberal politicians.

Whether he loves his country or not is irrelevant to me. I have no love for invisible borders. Though you're right - considering the way Cameron is destroying this country with his madman policies, he certainly cannot claim to love the UK in any way - but that's the Tories for you. He is arguably our weakest Prime Minister.. ever. Maggie was a ruthless, evil b*tch, but she was strong, at least. This idiot has no balls.
