wunderground has tomorrow nights low at 17. Nice, much better than before. unfortunately that big warm-up people are talking about puts us only at seasonal to slightly above for the most part and then maybe 1 or 2 days that are somewhat above average, not bad but doesn't offset the negative departures from this week much, but still at least the weather will be nice. Feb is running 4 degrees below average so far. average high is approaching 60 fast, 55 is average now. Also after this arctic blast there looks to be one more blast this time centered on the upper Midwest so I'm not too worried about it. So what are the odds NYC goes subzero at central park? I don't think it will happen due to the UHI, but it would be first time since 1994 if It happens, a whole 22 year run of not hitting subzero hope it will keep going and they make it through tomorrow night.

And JFK hasn't gone below zero since 1985 (31 years). Even before the UHI influence of today, subzero temperatures were a rarity in NYC. The climate doesn't really support <0F, even under the perfect conditions it's always a fight.

Stark contrast from the microclimate of Westhampton on Long Island which can plunge far below zero with ease and rebound within minutes.

Maybe I was thinking of the webcam for Whiteface.

Check it out... Is it this one? Interestingly I remember that name. That's one of the trail names to get to the Summit of Algonquin and Marcy. I believe its a road name too. Coop station in that town? Was very secluded that area.

Click on station then scroll down will give you elevation and coordinates and stuff. 2000' for the one I circled.

Jacksonville, Florida is currently 75 F.
Jacksonville, North Carolina is currently 35 F.

That's a pretty big contrast over a rather short distance.

Tracking the Vortex.

4pm now exiting Southern Hudson Bay. Check out the temps underneath & around it. -20F during the daytime with a few clouds around. That air is frigid. Arrows are the Upper level flow and how the air and moisture is moving..

And here are the mid Level temps with 500mb heights. A small Consolidated area but frigid air mass.

Remember the -20C air that was over NYC and New England last night? That left, now another will rotate into the area.

No Arctic thread? Too late and Too Short.

"If Boston manages to get to -8F Sunday (unlikely, but not impossible, would be coldest temp since 1957"

Coincidentally this arctic blast coincides with the 117 year anniversary of the 1899 cold outbreak which saw Raleigh plunge to -2 which still stands as the all time record here for February, luckily we will be far from -2 lol. The daily record minimum for the last day of Feb. in Raleigh is 24 degrees! weird. all time record for march is 11, that's why once its march I don't worry about going below 20, most years we don't go below 20 in march.
