Current 1pmEST temps. Clouds and 20s. Will be interesting to see Sun and Teens this weekend.
Think it's instability. Hard to distinguish on your map; the clouds don't have less coverage away from the lake. The snow flurries might be lake effect, obviously the ones right by Lake Ontario are. And the Eastern Massachusetts ones are ocean effect.

850 mb temperatures in western NY are much colder with a steeper lapse rate than here

LOL, we had a -5F high in early January during the severe cold snap. Low was -13F on that day (and month). Quite the change from last year's absolute low, which was 6F.

I'm not a fan of extreme cold except for rare isolated events once in a decade, but damn if we could get some snow and highs could be like 25F. This 37F rainy crap is just BS. Ok, fair enough, as the streets are snowless and iceless, I can bike instead of taking the bus, but November reloaded is not what I asked for.

Yea, snowless winters are a plus bike-wise but 30s isn't that fun to bike in. Rain and 30s sounds really bad; I'd rather bike in light snow flurries. Once in college I went for a short bike ride with light snow and it changed to sleet. It stung so badly I pulled to the side of the road and waited 10 minutes for it switch back to snow. I used to bike semi-regularly in the 20s, I've become a wimp.

Last time Amherst has had a max temperature below 10°F was 2004. Forecast high of 9°F on Sunday. Haven't had a max below 10°F in February since 1979. What's with these late winter cold shots lately?

Last time Bridgeport went below -2° was Jan 22, 1984 hit -7°. Forecast calling for -4° Saturday night. Last time it happened in February was in the 1960s

Seasons have come late for past few yrs. Winter last year was late, Spring was late, summer, fall, now winter again this yr.

1127 AM EST THU FEB 11 2016

...MAJOR OUTBREAK OF COLD AIR THIS WEEKEND...

BITTERLY COLD TEMPERATURES WILL MOVE INTO THE AREA THIS WEEKEND.

* TEMPERATURES SATURDAY NIGHT INTO EARLY SUNDAY MORNING WILL FALL
CLOSE TO ZERO IN AND AROUND NEW YORK CITY...AND ZERO TO 5 BELOW
ACROSS LONG ISLAND...INTERIOR NORTHEAST NEW JERSEY...THE LOWER
HUDSON VALLEY...AND SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT. WIND CHILL VALUES
DURING THIS TIME COULD REACH LIFE THREATENING LEVELS AS COLD AS
20 TO 25 BELOW ZERO.

* HIGH TEMPERATURES ON SUNDAY WILL ONLY BE IN THE TEENS.

* COLD SPELLS OF THIS MAGNITUDE BRING A RISK OF FROSTBITE AND
HYPOTHERMIA FOR ANYONE WHO DOES NOT TAKE PROPER PRECAUTIONS. IN
ADDITION...FROZEN PIPES AND OVERWORKED FURNACES COULD LEAVE YOUR
HOUSE WITHOUT HEAT OR RUNNING WATER...AND CAR BATTERIES RUN THE
RISK OF DYING.

* NEVER VENTURE OUTDOORS WITHOUT WEARING GLOVES...A HAT AND
SEVERAL LAYERS OF CLOTHING. WIND CHILL VALUES LATE SATURDAY
NIGHT INTO SUNDAY MORNING COULD LEAD TO FROSTBITE IN LESS THAN
30 MINUTES IF PROPER PRECAUTIONS ARE NOT TAKEN.

* RUN WATER AT A TRICKLE AND KEEP CABINET DOORS OPEN TO PREVENT
PIPES FROM FREEZING.

* NEVER USE A STOVE OR OVEN TO HEAT YOUR HOME OR USE AN OPEN FLAME
TO MELT FROZEN PIPES. MANY HOUSE FIRES RESULT FROM THESE
PRACTICES.

* CHECK TIRE PRESSURE AND YOUR CAR BATTERY. BE SURE YOUR CAR HAS
A WINTER SAFETY KIT THAT INCLUDES A BLANKET...WARM CLOTHES AND
GLOVES IN CASE YOUR CAR BREAKS DOWN OR BECOMES STRANDED.

You beat me to posting that! Oh, you posted NWS New York, here's NWS Boston:

...POTENTIALLY LIFE THREATENING WIND CHILLS WITH EXTREME COLD
THIS WEEKEND...

* TEMPERATURES THIS WEEKEND WILL FALL BELOW ZERO SAT NIGHT INTO
EARLY SUNDAY MORNING ACROSS MOST OF THE REGION INCLUDING THE
CITIES OF BOSTON...PROVIDENCE...HARTFORD AND WORCESTER.

* THE CORE OF COLD AIR ARRIVES SATURDAY AFTERNOON AND THEN SETTLES
OVER THE REGION SATURDAY NIGHT AND SUNDAY. BITTERLY COLD WINDS
WILL EASE SUNDAY NIGHT INTO MONDAY BUT ACTUAL AIR TEMPERATURES
WILL REMAIN VERY COLD.

* NORTHWEST WINDS OF 15 TO 25 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 40 MPH WILL
RESULT IN WIND CHILL VALUES BETWEEN 15 AND 25 DEGREES BELOW
ZERO...WITH THE COLDEST VALUES ACROSS THE HIGHER TERRAIN WHERE
30 DEGREES BELOW ZERO WIND CHILLS ARE POSSIBLE! THESE VALUES
WILL RESULT IN FROSTBITE TO OCCUR IN 10 MINUTES OR LESS ON
EXPOSED SKIN. RESIDENTS ARE HIGHLY ENCOURAGED TO TAKE PROPER
PRECAUTIONS WITH LIMITING EXPOSED SKIN.

* IF YOU HAVE NOT DONE SO ALREADY...BE SURE TO COVER EXPOSED PIPES
TO REDUCE THE THREAT OF FROZEN PIPES OR PIPE BURSTS.

* ENSURE YOUR FURNACES ARE IN WORKING ORDER. FOLLOW MANUFACTURES
INSTRUCTIONS OR UTILIZE A QUALIFIED TECHNICIAN TO ENSURE PROPER
AND SAFE OPERATION OF YOUR FURNACE.

* NEVER VENTURE OUTDOORS WITHOUT WEARING GLOVES...A HAT AND
SEVERAL LAYERS OF CLOTHING.

For those that asked how or why does the Vortex drop down to Canada/U.S .. You might have your answer here..

Watch Paulie P's video (1st link). He explains it.

Quick quote:

"Looking at the AO, when you get warming taking place over the pole, the wind field changes. The turn of the winds slows down the westerlies then they go more easterly and you get buckling taking place, the Jet starts to shift all over, you get cold air that gets released from the Polar Region and then comes straight down to the mid Latitudes and that a lot of times happens with dramatic changes as we see happening now"

AO going negative this weekend, then goes up and we get a moderation, then watch out.. more negative AO possible. After a Touch of Spring around Feb 22nd then He thinks more cold and more widespread rather than just focused on the Northeast like this weekend. Says will last into March but of course with ups and downs.
