Interesting statistic about the February 2015 North American cold wave: Tropical Big Cypress National Preserve got a freak freeze during that month, while much colder, SUBtropical New Orleans and Dauphin Island did not.

Each of these statistics is interesting in and of themselves. But together they are even moreso.

Especially since there was no freeze in Big Cypress National Preserve. And the NWS data shows a low of 30 in New Orleans.

As much as I wish you were right, there was. Select the Oasis Ranger Station (Big Cypress' weather station) for February 2015, the 20th reached 0 degrees.

Oh I know the low was recorded as 0 (32F), but that is not a freeze.

Just as 30 in New Orleans was not considered a freeze https://www.weather.gov/wrh/Climate?wfo=lix

Sorry, I should have specified Audubon Park when I said New Orleans. With that out of the way, 0 Celsius in Big Cypress as well as -1.1 Celsius at the Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport would be freezes.

We would enter the realm of technical details about what is meant by "a freeze", a term that means a "freeze warning" would be issued, if we continued with an argument over terms. The air temperature in Big Cyprus reached 0, while Audubon Park did not, which is satisfactory for an interesting weather statistic.

If you don't remember it being this cold this early in this area, you're right.

Mean Max temp for NYC for the period of September 25-Oct 4, 2022 is 64.2°.
8th coldest on record and hasn't been this cold for the period since 1928 (94yrs ago)

Just got more interesting. It's been over 120 yrs since being that cold for the period of September 25-Oct 5.

Bridgeport, CT. Mean Max temp for period of Sept 25-Oct 5, 2022 was 64.6°. 4th coldest on record for the period.

Hartford nothing extreme but when you use Sept 28-October 5 period they were 8th coldest. Providence 4th coldest.

^.

As for another: To my pleasant surprise, Gainesville just managed to avoid getting a freeze in the vicious cold snap on March 12-13, 2022. This is in spite of both its fairly high diurnal temperature variation (so nights are cool relative to averages, probably freezing more than somewhere with warmer nights) and inland location.

Not to mention, a lot of places with normally warmer March nights/minima/more maritime influence got freezes (like Sapelo Island, Jacksonville, Houston, Lake Charles, San Antonio/Austin, Baton Rouge Lafayette, and Gulfport) in that cold snap. Similar to the previous fact, it is interesting that Gainesville avoided the freeze while these places got it, or that they got a freeze even though it didn't (however you look at it).

Sitka, AK just broke its record high for Oct. 4 by 10 degrees F.

WOW!! Monthly record high temperature set Tuesday when Sitka's mercury topped out at 70°. It broke the daily record by 10°. HOW? Down sloping wind further warmed the air as it descended.."
