The maps don't seem quite right. It is 7 degrees in Kansas City right now (Sunday night). It's supposed to be -8 by 7:00 a.m. - actual temperature, not wind chill.

I forgot another factor in all this. Even though it will moderate pushing east the arctic air will be over the warmer bodies of water like the sound and Atlantic.

NWS NY

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NEW YORK NY
1001 PM EST SUN JAN 5 2014

THERE IS THE POTENTIAL A FLASH FREEZE MONDAY EVENING AS ANY
STANDING WATER FROM RAIN AND MELTING SNOW IS LIKELY TO FREEZE
FAIRLY QUICKLY AS TEMPS FALL INTO THE 20S OVER FAR NW ZONES.
ELSEWHERE...THERE MAY BE ENOUGH TIME TO DRY OUT BEFORE TEMPS CRASH
INTO THE SINGLE DIGITS TO MID TEENS BY DAYBREAK TUESDAY...BUT EVEN
WET ROADS WILL FREEZE UP DURING THE OVERNIGHT.

TIGHT WESTERLY PRES GRADIENT FORMS BETWEEN HIGH PRES OVER THE
EASTERN U.S. AND DEPARTING LOW PRES OVER EASTERN CANADA. 850 MB
TEMPS WILL FALL TO -20 C TO -25C...RESULTING IN TUESDAY MORNING
TEMPS IN THE SINGLE DIGITS TO MID TEENS...AND HIGHS ON TUESDAY
WILL BE IN THE LOW TO MID TEENS. WEST WINDS OF 20-30 MPH WITH
30-40 MPH GUSTS WILL RESULT IN DANGEROUSLY LOW WIND CHILLS. THE
COLDEST WIND CHILLS WILL BE ACROSS THE LOWER HUDSON VALLEY TUESDAY
MORNING...WHERE WIND CHILLS WILL RANGE FROM -15 TO -20F...WHICH
WOULD WARRANT A WIND CHILL ADVISORY. FOR THE REST OF THE CWA...THE
WIND CHILLS WILL RANGE FROM -5 TO AS LOW AS -15F. VERY COLD ON
TUESDAY WITH NOT MUCH RISE IN TEMPS OR WIND CHILLS.

THE STRONG WNW WINDS AND COLD AIR IN THE LOW LEVELS FROM MONDAY
NIGHT INTO TUESDAY NIGHT WILL ALSO CREATE CONDITIONS RIPE FOR
SOUND EFFECT SNOW
. AS TIME GOES ON...CONFIDENCE INCREASES...SO
WILL KEEP SLIGHT CHANCE/CHANCE POPS OVER THE TWIN FORKS ON TUESDAY
AFTERNOON. GIVEN DEGREE OF SEPARATION BETWEEN 850 TEMPERATURE AND
WATER TEMPERATURE (25-30C)
WOULD NOT BE SURPRISED THAT COULD END
UP WITH SOME ACCUMULATING SNOW ACROSS EASTERN PORTIONS OF THE
ISLAND...POSSIBLY WITH SOME IMPRESSIVE SNOW BURSTS.

How doesn't it seem right? It's very possible for temps to drop 15 degrees from 11 pm to 7 am.

I said the maps shown at the beginning of the thread didn't seem right. They showed forecasted temps significantly higher than we are having now. I didn't say it's not possible for temperatures to drop that much; that happens all the time here. It was the forecasted temps that I thought didn't seem right, not the fact that our temperature is going to drop overnight.

My apologies I didn't know you were referring to the map on the 1st page, I thought you were referring to a more recent map. I agree the map on the 1st page looks far too warm for many locations

Warm night ahead. Temperature of 34.6 F right now. High of 45 F and low of -3 F tomorrow. Time to see mother natures craziness at its prime. What happened to her. Why is she hating on the US.

This is just insane! We're going through the same thing… snow's still all over the ground here in the Philly area, but it's a balmy 58° outside! (at 6:30 am). Foggy as anything, since the warm air is hitting the snow.

It's supposed to go down to about 2° tomorrow night. Then back up into the 40s the next day. Why would it dip so far just for one day??
