Even though I would enjoy winters there, the rest of the year is horrible.

Yes, that is true, St Petersburg does have better winters (since I like cold snowy winters) and better "summers" than Dublin. However, in general and to my standard, I still find St Petersburg to have horrible summers, hardly worth being called such.

The anchor seasons are both horrible, but worse in St Pertersburg.

St. Petersburg by a little. Summers are warmer, and even though winters are too cold at least it snows.

Summers in St Pete have been quite good the recent years actually. Of course not warm enough for you, but still have got a fair share of warm/hot days. Certainly more than Dublin.

June 2013:

This period tells everything quite truthfully. Mostly sunny and comfy around 75F, then a cool spell, and again a warm nice one in early August:

Even cooler, or 'normal' summers, like 2012, gets at least some nice days:

July 2011:

July 2010:

August 2010 ended in an epic fail :

Dublin seems to have much more stable temps. Not getting very warm, but no very cold spells either. IMO lacks both ying and yang.

If you compare St Pete with my location, they certainly get more variation than this mini-Dublin:
