Checking in from Maine here -- It is amazing that last winter at this very date we had no snowfall since mid January and probably less than 2 inches on the ground. Then ther rest of the winter of 2010 we had NO snow at all. Today, (Jan. 25, 2011) it is not even 10 degrees here and there must be over 20 inches on the ground. The last storm on Friday was over 15" and nine days before whe had gotten almost 10 inches. The week before that one we had about 7"
Went out for a brief appointment this morning and by the time I returned I couldn't feel my toes. Car hardly warmed up at all as the appointment was only a mile away. Staying in the rest of the day and hope for the best tomorrow. But they are saying another 6" starting Wednesday night into Thursday.
I felt the same while driving yesterday morning. I guess sneakers and one pair of socks weren't enough. Car certainly runs colder this time of year.
Right now we have about a foot of snow on the ground with the possiblity of another winter storm tomorrow. Could do without the extreme cold, but this winter has been great. Hope it lasts well into April.
So far January has had a lot of days with snow,
followed by reliable morning sun melting what fell the day or night before.
Quite peculiar now that I'm seeing more precip and sun vs. December 2010.
We've had plenty of sun, but even with the sun it's too cold to do much melting. Especially since we keep getting more snow. There's no break in the cold. Ugh.

I should have been more specific; melting snow off parked cars.
The snowcover itself isn't going anywhere fast,
but the sun does help take a half-inch in a day off if it's strong enough.
(some sublimation going on too?)

Compaction too, I'd imagine. I remember last year I built a snowman the same size as me, only to find the next day it only went up to my shoulders, and it had been too cold/shaded to melt.
I'm hearing of thunder-sleet/hail in Queens. I just looked at the radar and sure enough there's a narrow thunderstorm band moving through Queens & Nassau County. There's also thunderstorms off shore.
Currently 30 F with snow and freezing fog. I'm surprised my county is only under a winter weather advisory while the rest of the state in under a warning. We seem to be getting hit just as hard with the heavy snow. May be the biggest storm of the season. I'll take some pictures tomorrow morning.
19 inches in Central Park...107 inches since last season. Snowiest January on record as well. My area is probably in the neighborhood of 100 inches since last season.
Not sure how much snow we got with this latest storm, so I'll find out later, but here's some pics.
