Going to begin searching craigs**** for apts in a month or so. Want a neighborhood where there's plenty to do, I can feel safe walking around, and can get to public transportation -- preferably the Metro -- on foot, if necessary.

Price not really an object, but all things being equal, cheaper is of course better.

Where should I start searching?

TIA

Well it depends on a lot of things. Do you have a car? Where are you going to be working? My fav DC neighborhoods are U street and Dupont Circle, always something going on and you really don't need a car in those neighborhoods especially Dupont.

You say money isn't an object but have you really looked at how expensive DC is?

Adams Morgan is an awesome place to live, tons of stuff to do. don't go stumbling around drunk on weekend nights though, although I never personally had any problems. If you want to have access to fun stuff while still living in a safe area, woodley park is also quite good. its just across the park from Adams Morgan and a very easy walk. In general the safer neighborhoods are the less fun in my opinion.

money has be an option. even the sketchy neighborhoods in DC are a tad bit expensive. But if you say money doesn't matter look at U street, Logan Circle, and Woodley Park.

For safety, fun and public transit access in DC, look at:

Dupont
Logan Circle
U Street
Adams-Morgan
Capitol Hill
Foggy Bottom
Woodley Park
Penn Quarter

I love my neighborhood of Mount Pleasant. I feel safer here than Adams Morgan which is only a 10 minute walk or so away. It's right by the Columbia Heights Metro. There's tons to do being near AdMo and Col Heights with some decent restaurants on Mount Pleasant St.

Some people mention Capital Hill, but you have to be careful with that. It's a HUGE neighborhood. Some of it is my favorite in the city. Other parts are terrible. Much of it may not be near a Metro stop. Then there's plenty of parts that have very high crime. Around RFK you'll find some. Then as you go north there is a lot more. Capital Hill actually kept expanding its borders. It sounds better for real estate to say your living in Capital Hill then say Trinidad. Many of us firemen here actually call part of it Trinidad South because that's pretty much what it is.

Others I recommend:
Dupont
Logan
U St(probably one of my favorite neighborhoods)
Eastern Market(part of Capital Hill)
Mount Pleasant
Woodley Park
Penn Quarter
Foggy Bottom

Some that have a bit more crime, but have a lot to do or are improving:
Adams Morgan
Columbia Heights
Parts of Shaw
Other parts of Capital Hill

I am reading this thread because my 23 year old daughter graduates in July and has accepted a job offer with Equity Residential. She interned there last summer and lived in fairfax. Was really happy with that area, but rent is pretty high . Looking for something less expensive in that portfolio. The cheapest rent for properties in that portfolio are located in Manassas. Have been told we shouldn't really consider that area, not safe. Is Centerville a safe area.

Who is giving you this information? Manassas not safe? The biggest reason I would have for not wanting to live there is because it's something like 6 hours away from DC. But crime and safety wouldn't even register as a concern--it's just a DC ex-urb, and it's perfectly fine. Same goes for Centerville (although it is misnamed--it isn't the "center" of anything).

Yeah, Manassas and Centreville are FAR out from DC. Those would be hellish commutes by car. At least Manassas has the VRE and a PRTC bus route that connects with (I think) the West Falls Church Metro station. Manassas also has IMO a nice but small downtown area.
