Okay, you have to be making this stuff up...

Tobacco died before slots even showed up in the first place. The clear-cutting of forests for Tobacco farms silted in Port Tobacco itself back in the late 1800s (like near turn-of-century), if memory serves, and tobacco wasn't really a focus after the abolition of slavery AND PT becoming a increasingly silted port. Around that same time, the county seat was moved to La Plata, since they got a railroad station. Bit of irony in that sequence of events too!

All the while, Charles remained one of the least populated counties in the state, and certainly in the lower tier in terms of wealth. I remain relatively ignorant on Calvert and St. Mary's, however.

You are saying that tobacco was not a major crop is Southern Maryland after the 1800's is that correct, that is what you are saying? Not in Charles,St,Mary's or Calvert? With all due respect you remain ignorant(your words not mine)on Charles county all so.You know not of what you speak. If you doubt me call Maryland State senator Mac Middleton and he can enlighten you on whether you or I am correct.

This artical is from 2007 and talks about it thriving as late as 1999!
