I have to give credit to the staff and crew at BTV airport...did a great job getting the airport up and running even while it was still raining/sleeting/etc. Our flight landed just ten minutes later than scheduled and there were a lot of folks that had been waiting since the early morning cancelled flight to get home. Good work!

Is it freezing on contact? I wonder how high up it is below freezing. You might start getting snow or sleet mixing in. Air above is getting colder through the day. Would love to see a sounding from there.

We've had rain all morning, we are definitely above freezing, I think it was 36 when I went out a couple of hours ago. It's just a mess - most of the snow is gone, mud/slush everywhere.

Fot thae same reason it can snow above freezing, it was doing the same with the rain. We were at 26 degrees and it was pouring, no sleet or snow mixed in.

Hmmm, There's no such thing as rain at 26 degrees. That would be considered freezing rain since the surface is below freezing. Water freezes at 32°. Even if there is just a 100 foot layer of below freezing temps at the surface it would be refreezing on contact. Unless I'm about to be taught something otherwise. I never heard of rain with temps in the 20s.

Freezing rain - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Here's the sounding from Colecester at 1pm. It was snowing from 15,000 feet down to about 2000 feet where temps went above freezing to melt the snowflakes .

In order for it to rain there has to be a layer in the atmosphere above freezing. But if the surface is below freezing its considering freezing rain. That's why I asked was it freezing on contact. Freezing rain looks like rain.

Mid 20s everything would be freezing on surfaces.

Should start to get better from here on out. Front was slow to move. Here's a look at the current temps and radar. The colored background are the temps at 4000'. Black line represents the freezing line up there.

I'm waiting patiently for it to cross over here. Thats when temps will start to really drop.

Watch for scattered snow showers Christmas Eve. Should be dry & cold Christmas day.

Hope all of are ok, sometimes we forget what Ice Storms can do with over 1/2" of ice. I'm not sure where this pic is from (might be Maine) but from Toronto (cousins live there) to northern VT to Maine this was the scene in many areas.

Can't expect utility crews to start repairing right away. First comes assessment & inspection, then comes gathering the right material, then comes the work itself but even the first step is hard to do with ice and snow on the roads. What a storm

And the most unfortunate thing is that people are without power without backups and its going to get cold! Here's the possible Christmas morning min temps.
