It's a staple of the detective genre. Has been since the 1920s. "I got three slugs in me. Two are scotch and one's from a .38."

But yeah, it has gotten old to the point of cliche. It's actually one of the things I really enjoy about C.J. Box's Joe Pickett stories (the books, not the TV show). Joe is not perfect and definitely has his problems. But he's not an alcoholic. He didn't run over his best friend's dog. He loves his wife and kids. His wife and kids love him. He's just a very "boring" guy for the most part who has one fatal flaw: He has real integrity, and he will not let things go. That lands him in all sorts of trouble.

But the whole dark, twistedness of TRUE DETECTIVE is one of the big reasons I could never even get through Season 1. Characters with problems are one thing. But that was just misery porn.
The acting in Season 1 was great. Having been in law enforcement (hubs, too) we thought Matthew and Woody played it to the hilt. No, not all LEOs are nuts, nor are they all alcoholics, nor are they all divorced or have marital problems (many are) but we thought the portrayals of their respective characters was very realistic. (Read some James Lee Burke Dave Robicheaux novels - he has some inside baseball info).
Some cases drive detectives over the edge.

When we try to watch anything that is supposed to depict real police work, we are like "what BS." We know better. That's why this one resonated with us.

They sure doubled down on the supernatural angle. Hope it doesn't turn out to be another stupid cult.
A lot of this reminds me of Taylor Sheridan's 'Wind River'.
I think it's a bit more Lovecraft than cult. JMHO.

True enough. And I like a lot of dark TV and cinema. The difference for me though? Remember that old quote by Oscar Wilde? “We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.”

With TRUE DETECTIVE Season 1, no one was looking at the stars. Everyone seemed to be wallowing in the mud. It was just too much for me to take. But again, I only watched 3 or 4 episodes. Did it improve?

Sincere question, because there have definitely been other shows that took a while to find their feet.

Mark S. you really need to watch season 1: everyone's looking at the stars in the end

Exactly--one of the most uplifting endings ever.
Spoiler
"The light is winning."

I would like to think that S4 is headed in a similar direction, but I don't really see that coming. Dark, dark, dark.

I think I may already have written this upthread! But not watching all of S1 would be the same as Phoebe (Friends) not watching It's a Wonderful Life all the way, because it just got so depressing!

Just finished watching. Definitely not as good as season 1 (nothing is). Definitely worth the watch (but not a rewatch).

I thought the last episode was... awful. What a bad show.
I actually turned it off.
I've never done that before for a show I invested in....

I actually loved it. Maybe more so for the acting than some of the storyline - which was quirky but enjoyable for me -but still thought it was well done. Definitely better than season 2 or 3 but not as good as season 1.
