So true! About 8 years ago I told a 25 year old that he looked like Steve McQueen and got the same blank look! Their loss <sigh>

Priceless - thanks!

Default RIP Dick Clark

I'm sure y'all heard Dick Clark passed away today. Why am I posting it here? I had NO idea that's where Ryan Seacrest got his start. I've never done any background on him. He worked for Dick Clark! No WONDER he's such a wunderkind. Talk about studying at the feet of the master!
Dick Clark dies at age 82

When I read this article it all made sense. When I watch the Voice, the one thing missing is Ryan Seacrest. The difference between him and the guy who MC's the voice is huge. From the suits to the interaction with the guests and the way Ryan "manages" the judges. I've grown to like him. And I appreciate the subtle way he just makes things happen. He's definitely a pro. (Part of my job is MC-ing. So I really can appreciate what he's up against!)

I think Hollie did great! I am sick and tired of Randy trying to downplay everyone but Jessica. America is going to vote JS off and Randy needs to get a grip.

<off soapbox>

R_Cowgirl, I agree about Ryan - I did know about his history with Dick Clark but even that didn't make me like him originally. Like he did for you, though, he grew on me. His professionalism and work ethic are a big part of that. Very sad about Dick Clark - we knew it was coming and he had that struggle with the stroke a few years ago, but still - he was an icon and this is the end of an era.

Colton was just meh for me on that Gaga song. I didn't like how low he got just in order to hit the highs - if he can't do it he should have chosen a different song, IMO.

I love that Alicia K song and thought Elise did a decent job - not spectacular. Steven and Randy both gave her some helpful criticism which, to me, means they want to be honest but also want to mentor her so she can stay longer.

ETA: ok, so the next four - Philip, Jessica, Skylar, Joshua - all were stellar. Hard to choose who was the best so far but I think Colton and Elise were the worst of that round - and they were both good!

I think JLo feels like she's in church when Joshua sings.

Round two...

Hollie - She looked better and more age appropriate in that little pink outfit. A little gawky walking down the stairs, though - was afraid we were gonna get an eye full The singing was back to her usual for me - but in fairness anything very soulful in that way would be too much for her. Not her wheelhouse as they'd say.

Colton - Ack - that sucked - butchered EWF. Wonder why no one steered him away from that. Yikes.

Elise - Man, that was too bad - she's in a Hollie uptight rut. That was technically ok but otherwise contrived and not connected. Unlike Hollie, this genre is perfect for Elise - she should have been able to sing that or many other songs from the era very convincingly. Plus, it sounded like she was making excuses and American voters hate that.

Philip - case in point - he did exactly what they told Elise to do in a minute and whatever they have. He does it every time. Perfect song choice for him. I'm thinking he and Joshua will be the only ones who really get it this round but Skylar and Jessica could still be really good.

I hope someone sings Al Green!

Jessica
- Her enunciation at the beginning made me think of Elmer Fudd "women get wearwy". The performance was a little forced for most of it, IMO.

Skylar - Good start but I didn't love her version - it was too stagey. She is a good performer, though - dynamic and personable. I love how natural she and Philip are. She was so different from Joshua when Ryan basically said the same thing to them about wanting to be in the finale. Skylar was all "I sure hope so!" and Joshua just looked stunned and was speechless.

Joshua
- No surprise that he hit this one - I agree with the judges about how nice it was to hear him holding back and then let go. The vest was horrible but that kid can sing!

Some thoughts:

Woo! My girl Hollie nailed it tonight. She did amazing the first song but of course Randy had to point out the flaws even when the other judges said nothing but good things. Oh well, I really thought she did great in both performances. She can really belt out Adele songs.

Colton wasn't great tonight. I'm kind of glad to be honest, as bad as that sounds. But, I just got so tired of the judges riding him. I'm glad he was brought down to reality tonight. I sound so mean I'm sorry lol.

Joshua did really great tonight. The kid has a great voice. At times its too preachy for me and screamy, but tonight I enjoyed him.

Elise was good, but I just don't care for her voice. I can't get into her, but that's just me.

P2 was P2. Nothing changes with him. Most overrated contestant in my opinion.

Jessica was Jessica and the judges must be paid by her parents because they are so resistant to critiquing her.

And Skylar, Kevdawg's girl, did really good. She has great stage presence and the country twist to a Gaga song was really cool.

All in all, Hollie did great so I'm happy.
