SOMETHING BIG IS UP.

Downtown Houston

the downtown Houston website was updated recently..

Quote:
Downtown began its renewal in the mid-1990s, and since then, more than $6.1 billion of buildings, parks and infrastructure have been completed. Today, there is a construction boom underway with 4,200 residential units, 2,000 hotel rooms, and several million square feet of office space all underway or in the planning stages. Plus exciting new additions to downtown such as a state-of-the-art High School for the Performing and Visual Arts and the Nau Center for Cultural Center.
and $4.2 billion in construction and development just from 2014-2017.

Holl describes his work on the MFAH campus master plan

Quote:
Holl is contributing a unifying master plan, a 164,000-square-foot gallery space for 20th and 21st century art, and a new 80,000-square-foot facility for the Glassell School of Art. Lake | Flato is designing a state-of-the-art conservation center, which is still in the concept phase.

This is the most important commission of my career,” said Holl at a press luncheon in New York where he presented the plans. “What you see here is the culmination of a 36-month design process.

I love both cities in Texas. Each is unique on its own. If I have to choose one to live, it would be difficult because many pros outweight cons that seems to be nothing about each city. In my opinion, there are noticable differences that can help you to decide which one is a better fit for you as a place to live.

Dallas is truly Texan while Houston has more international feeling to it. Dallas is also more cosmopolitan and white collar so it seems to be materialistic like LA and NYC. Dallas seems to have all four seasons compared to Houston with coastal climate/higher humidity. Pro sports are generally better than Houston's.

While Houston is more international, its residents seem to be much friendlier and more down to earth. Houston has the advantage of being close to Galveston and the rest of Texas Gulf Coast. Houston is slightly closer to Austin, San Antonio, and New Orleans, LA. Houston has NASA. One of the cons for Houston is that the city can be prone to hurricanes (don't forget Rita).

Both have horrible traffic and sprawling suburbs. Dallas suburbs are more attractive but Houston still has Sugar Land, Pearson, Friendswood, etc. There are not much difference in terms of economy, big city amenties, shopping, and things to do.

I am not sure about the ranking of medical facilities and universities in each city but I heard they are excellent in both cities.

Both are diverse tolerant cities open to people from all walks of life compared to Texas that is heavily Republican.
