They get up and play the ball right away in league; whereas, gridiron milks the 40-second playclock. Why is the latter preferable?
I know.
I'm not sure - I've watched league on & off for a few years, but can't get into it.
Possibly because Aus football has finished when NFL is on, and I enjoy watching that more than tennis

i am sure there are more differences than that though.
It's interesting to watch the rivalry between League and Union...I never knew this.
In Sydney there is also the history of class differences .. the history of the sports is the union was played by university educated snobs, whilst league wasn't.
There is no class distinction in Australian Rules though.

League has two fewer players, as well. Also there are no rucks and mauls and scrums are scrums in name only, in League.
For me though, the main difference outside of just what rules are different is that League is much faster and exciting. Union seems to just turn into kick fests. Scrums, rucks and mauls aren't exciting. It is just a chore.
Union is very much a cynical and plodding game. They slowly force the other team into mistakes instead of taking the ball in hand and running to the try line. The NZ provincial comp and S14 alright at times, but Northern Hemisphere games are completely unwatchable.

Talking about the NZ Provincial Comp it starts on Thursday, like watching this better than the Super 14, I'll be at Southland first Shield defence!
International Rugby is still the best to watch, especially the Southern Hemisphere teams.
I watched some highlights on Aus/RSA and there were actually four tries scored (despite many penalties). I will probably sit down for Aus/NZ coming up. The ABs are much more inclined to run than most nations.
