Even if a student is symptomatic when in quarantine Florida does not require that they be tested for Covid-19. This raises concerns about undercounts.

COVID-19 testing not required for Fla. students who are quarantined
https://www.abcactionnews.com/news/b...re-quarantined

Dr. Frederick Southwick, a University of Florida professor of medicine infectious disease specialist, and advocate for rapid tests in schools, said without testing those in quarantine, schools are fueling a statewide under-count of cases.

“It underestimates the problem and the prevalence of the disease,” Southwick said. "Therefore you will underestimate the danger of keeping schools open."

Hmm - to me the term "interim analyzes" sounds like something that isn't completely finished.

Pfizer vaccine trial bets on early win against coronavirus, documents show
https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/oth...ow/ar-BB199tPn

Pfizer said its interim analyzes were designed to show conclusive evidence "as quickly as possible amid the devastating pandemic if our vaccine meets the stringent standards set by FDA."

"These interim analyzes have a flashing sign of short cuts," said Eric Topol, director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute in La Jolla, California. "You miss safety issues and you may very well exaggerate the benefits."

Surprisingly vitamin D insufficiency is common in Florida (because of sunscreen use).

Boston University study finds Vitamin D reduces COVID-19 risk by 54%
https://www.boston25news.com/news/he...outputType=amp

The study, which appears in PLOS ONE, compared COVID-19 infection rates against blood levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D in more than 190,000 U.S. patients. Holick called the findings ‘remarkable.’

“If you’re Vitamin D deficient, you have a 54% higher risk of acquiring this infection compared to people who were Vitamin D sufficient,” he said.

We've been taking vitamin D for months, as a preventative measure....and zinc too, but make sure to take Zinc after a meal, or it will upset your stomache. If you don't eat lots of fruits, and vegees, take vitamin C too.

Seems to me that the US Department of Health and Human Services did an "end-around" and dropped the controversial Covid-19 testing stragety on the CDC web site without their approval. Anyway now the CDC is oficially saying it's OK for asymptomatic people to get tested.

Controversial coronavirus testing guidance came from HHS and didn't go through CDC scientific review, sources say
https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2020/09/18/h...hhs/index.html

A controversial update to US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's coronavirus testing guidance last month was not written by CDC scientists and was posted online before it had undergone the normal scientific review process, two sources confirm to CNN.

The guidance was updated again on Friday, and now stresses that anyone who has been in contact with an infected person should be tested for coronavirus.

CDC updates, again, guidelines on testing people without coronavirus symptoms
https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2020/09/18/h...-bn/index.html

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's website has updated, yet again, guidelines for testing people who do not have symptoms of coronavirus.

The new language rolls back controversial changes made to the site last month. It once again stresses that anyone who has been in contact with an infected person should be tested for coronavirus.

This bar is in West Melbourne (Brevard County) where there is no mask mandate for businesses.

Florida bar owner bans masks, will eject patrons who wear face coverings: 'I don't want them here'
https://www.foxnews.com/food-drink/f...bans-masks.amp

The owner of a bar in Florida has outright banned any patrons from wearing masks or face coverings amid the COVID-19 pandemic, saying he doesn’t “agree” with the idea.

Gary Kirby, the owner of Westside Sports Bar and Lounge in West Melbourne, told Fox News that he's been getting death threats for prohibiting masks at his establishment but claimed that the people in his town have "for the most part been in 100% support" of his decision.

Even more evidence shows the coronavirus spreads easily on long plane flights
https://news.yahoo.com/even-more-evi...111200876.html

Based on their findings, the researchers think airlines might be downplaying the risks of coronavirus transmission on flights.

"The latest guidance from the international air-travel industry classifies the in-flight transmission risk as very low, and recommends only the use of face masks without additional measures to increase physical distance on board, such as blocking the middle seats," the authors wrote. "Our findings challenge these recommendations."

This happened in a Ft. Lauderdale Target store. Dee Snider is the frontman of the band Twisted Sister, he tweeted: "No ... these selfish (expletive) do not have my permission or blessing to use my song for their moronic cause."

Dee Snider scolds anti-mask parade of people in MAGA gear playing Twisted Sister song at Florida Target
https://amp.usatoday.com/amp/3485442001

"Take your masks off. We're not doing it. Take off your masks. We're not going to take it anymore," the group shouted, pumping their fists in the air, some wearing "Make America Great Again" gear.

“We’re Americans, breathe,” a woman yelled. “It’s all a lie!”

In both Sarasota & Manatee Counties we saw testing pick up a bit this week along with the number of new cases. In Sarasota County there was a very slight increase in the test positivity rate - while Manatee County had a more noticeable increase in their test positivity rate.

Hospitalizations (which lag new cases by about two weeks) held steady in Sarasota County and had a more noticeable decline in Manatee County. Emergency room visits for Covid-19 symptoms held steady at 50 for Sarasota County - and declined slightly in Manatee County from 78 to 74. Interestingly both counties saw increases in emergency room visits for "influenza-like illness".

Taken all together this suggests to me that we're in the process of forming a bottom. IMO the best case scenerio from here would be if we flatline (more or less) where we're at for the next few weeks - however while that's a possibility the more likely outcome will be another uptrend in the coming weeks.

September 6th = 38 Covid-19 patients hospitalized
September 13th = 36 Covid-19 patients hospitalized
September 19th = 35 Covid-19 patients hospitalized

Manatee County:

August 23rd = 39 Covid-19 patients hospitalized
August 30th = 25 Covid-19 patients hospitalized
September 6th = 20 Covid-19 patients hospitalized
September 13th = 21 Covid-19 patients hospitalized

Gottlieb says HHS move to centralize control over agencies "makes no sense". Also the former FDA commissioner says he thinks the U.S. will have "at least one more cycle with this virus, heading into the fall and winter."

Gottlieb "deeply concerned" about uptick in coronavirus cases heading into fall

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eX4AwZeKnbs

Washington — Dr. Scott Gottlieb, the former head of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), criticized a new policy by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) giving only the secretary the authority to sign off on new rules, saying the timing "makes no sense" and risks creating the perception that the agency he helmed is being bullied.

"I think that this is the wrong move at the wrong time," Gottlieb said Sunday on "Face the Nation. "At a time that they should be reaffirming the independence and the integrity of these agency, to do this now just makes no sense."
