Sarasota Police warn of hours-long wait times at COVID-19 testing site

https://www.mysuncoast.com/2022/01/0...-testing-site/

The Sarasota Police Department has officers out directing traffic at the former Sarasota Kennel Club, according to the department’s Twitter page.

Officers are guiding drivers lining up to get tested for Covid-19, at the site at 5400 Old Bradenton Road.

Just before 11 a.m., Tuesday, the department posted that wait times were as long as 4 hours, once drivers enter the parking lot. SPD is recommending that people who need to get tested, consider the Ed Smith Stadium and Robert L. Taylor Community Complex testing sites.

Omicron Variant Symptoms: Latest COVID ‘Making People Really Sick in a Different Way'

https://news.google.com/articles/CBM...S&ceid=US%3Aen

As COVID-19 infections with the omicron variant of the virus surge out of control nationwide, emergency rooms are filling up again -- and one well-known New York City doctor says what they're seeing now is much different than the last two years of the pandemic.

Manhattan emergency room physician Dr. Craig Spencer took to Twitter late Monday night to explain how the current surge is different -- both in who's coming to the ER and how they're being affected by the highly contagious virus.

"Today it seemed like everyone had COVID. Like, so many. And yes, like before, there were some really short of breath and needing oxygen. But for most, COVID seemed to topple a delicate balance of an underlying illness. It’s making people really sick in a different way," Spencer wrote.

Spencer cited a few examples - diabetic being tipped into ketoacidosis, the elderly who were so weak from being ill that they couldn't get out of bed, and etc.

"What’s also different now is those COVID cases are often in beds next to patients who’ve done everything to avoid the virus, and for whom an infection might have a dramatic toll. The cancer patient on chemotherapy. Those immunocompromised or severely sick with something else," Spencer said.

He acknowledged, as studies around the world have concluded, that the omicron variant seems to cause milder disease than the delta variant that tore through the country last summer. But at the same time, with so many more people infected, for hospital purposes it ends up not really mattering.

"But there’s just SO much of it and it’s impacting patients in different ways. So even if just a tiny portion of cases need to stay in the hospital, it can turn into a huge influx," Spencer tweeted.

"Every patient I’ve seen with Covid that’s had a 3rd ‘booster’ dose has had mild symptoms. By mild I mean mostly sore throat. Lots of sore throat. Also some fatigue, maybe some muscle pain. No difficulty breathing. No shortness of breath. All a little uncomfortable, but fine," Spencer wrote.

From there, it goes downhill, depending on your vaccination status or lack thereof.

Have you seen an explanation as to why some unvaccinated people don't get COVID?

That's the population that needs to be studied, IMO.

Today's Update From Sarasota Memorial Hospital

Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Sarasota & Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Venice
COVID-19 Patient Update:
Includes hospitalized patients who are positive for COVID-19 and those cleared of infection but still hospitalized at SMH facilities.

Total COVID inpatients today: 104 (97 yesterday)
COVID patients in ICU: 15 (12 yesterday)
% Unvaccinated Inpatients*: 67% (updated weekly on Wednesdays)

* We categorize patients as “vaccinated†once they have received the required primary dose(s) of a COVID-19 vaccine and 2 weeks have passed since the final dose. At this time, we do not require that patients have booster doses to be categorized as fully vaccinated. An increase in break-through infections is expected as the Omicron variant spreads and immunity wanes among those who are high-risk and those who have not yet gotten a booster dose. COVID-19 vaccinations and booster shots are still the most effective method in preventing severe illness and hospitalization.

COVID-19 Test Results:
SMH positivity rate: 25.2% (19.4% for week ending Dec. 31, 2021)

Cumulative COVID-19 Cases:
Total number of patients treated since outbreak began.
Patient admissions: 4,997 (4,968 yesterday)
Patient deaths: 537 (no change from yesterday)

The HHS hasn't released their FL Covid hospital data for today yet. But based on my 2 posts from today I detect a small hint that were getting closer to a top. Jackson Health System in Miami posted a slight decline in Covid hospitalizations today. Miami was the first and hardest hit area of Florida - so it makes sense that Miami will peak before other Counties in Florida.

The test positivity ratio declined slightly today at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. The test positivity ratio usually peaks about a week or two before hospitalizations peak.

It's still early and one day doesnt make a trend - but keeping my fingers crossed that we're a week or two away from a top. Also it still remains to be seen if school openings will have an effect on the numbers.
