For the week of Dec. 10 - 16:

Manatee County

Cases: 239 (11.6% rise from the previous weeks cases of 214)

This evening the FDOH released their weekly county covid report. Sarasota & Manatee Counties saw big increases in cases - which confirms my assumption that Omicron is now spreading fast in our area. For the next week or so interpreting the data will be tricky because testing sites close down on the holidays.

Manatee County

Pfizer antiviral pills may be risky with other medications

https://news.google.com/articles/CAI...S&ceid=US%3Aen

As the omicron surge pummels a pandemic-weary nation, the first antiviral pills for Covid-19 promise desperately needed protection for people at risk of severe disease. However, many people prescribed Pfizer’s or Merck’s new medications will require careful monitoring by doctors and pharmacists, and the antivirals may not be safe for everyone, experts caution.

The Food and Drug Administration authorized Pfizer’s Paxlovid for mild to moderate Covid in people as young as 12 who have underlying conditions that raise the risk of hospitalization and death from the coronavirus, such as heart disease or diabetes. However, one of the two drugs in the antiviral cocktail could cause severe or life-threatening interactions with widely used medications, including statins, blood thinners and some antidepressants. And the FDA does not recommend Paxlovid for people with severe kidney or liver disease.

Flights to/from SRQ canceled due to COVID-related staff shortage

https://www.msn.com/en-us/travel/new...age/ar-AAS7yTo

At least four flights to and from Sarasota Bradenton International Airport Friday are among the hundreds canceled Christmas Eve nationwide by several airlines.

Three flights to SRQ -- Allegiant Air Flight 2523 from Fort Wayne, Indiana, Delta Flight 1244 from Detroit, and JetBlue Flight 347 from Newark, New Jersey -- were canceled by the airlines.

A JetBlue Flight returning to Newark from SRQ was also canceled.

A spokeswoman for Allegiant Air told ABC7 via email Friday morning that the airline was forced to cancel the flight Wednesday because of staffing shortages blamed on COVID-19. " ... Like other businesses and airlines across the nation, we are experiencing staffing issues related to the rapid increase in Omicron cases,” said Sonya Padgett.

Someone on NextDoor in the Nokomis/Venice area messaged me.
Said all 4 in her family, two adults and 2 youngers, came down w/3 sick last few days. Everyone got it but young one boosted in last 3 wks so antibodies were higher.
The mom took fast and slow test same day…both negative…still felt sick so got another fast test…still Meg
Took 4th test 5 days after feeling sick to get positive CoVid read
And she still feels bad…not hospital sick but bad flu
Other two didn’t get it so bad and 1 not at all

So this version is different in its manifestations (aren’t they all)…
And you an bet that way more people have it and don’t know it if they were vaxxed…
So. Wear. Your. Masks. KN95s or better
NO CLOTH

Hospitalizations are trending modestly higher at Sarasota Memorial Hospital - but this wave started from a low base so currently we are no where near the level seen during the delta wave. Also notice the test positivity level at SMH took a big jump up to 11.4% (from 6.6% for the week ending Dec. 24th). I'm expecting the test positivity ratio for the omicron wave to at least get as high as the delta wave peak (~19%). And hospitalizations lag the positivity ratio by 1 to 2 weeks - thus IMO it doesn't seem as though we're near a peak in hospitalizations yet.

Today's Update From Sarasota Memorial Hospital

Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Sarasota & Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Venice
COVID-19 Patient Update
Includes hospitalized patients who are positive for COVID-19 and those cleared of infection but still hospitalized at SMH facilities.

Total COVID inpatients today: 45 (32 yesterday) (27 on Thursday)
COVID patients in ICU: 9 (7 yesterday) (5 on Thursday)
% Unvaccinated Inpatients: 74% (updated weekly on Wednesdays)

COVID-19 Test Results
SMH positivity rate: 11.4% (6.6% for week ending Dec. 24, 2021)

Cumulative COVID-19 Cases:
Total number of patients treated since outbreak began.
Patient admissions: 4,830 (4,816 yesterday)
Patient deaths: 534 (no change from yesterday)

"Florida Hospital update (2406)
43% increase from one week prior
4.5% increase from yesterday.

EXPECT big increases in days ahead, since Monday is usually a low census day. (do not panic over that).

I still believe this is muted compared with Delta wave."

Unfortunately Florida pediatric hospitalizations are higher than adults. IMO this could be because the 0-5 age group is not yet available for vaccines. See the chart here:

"Pediatric hospital admissions are tracking noticeably higher than adult COVID-19 admissions in Florida"

I noticed that the % of non-vaxed patients is also lower since Omicron can infected the vaxed/boosted crowd
And apparently those already vaxed can still have case requiring hospitalization

CDC shortens recommended Covid-19 isolation and quarantine time

https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2021/12/27/h...ion/index.html

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Monday shortened the recommended times that people should isolate when they've tested positive for Covid-19 from 10 days to five days if they don't have symptoms -- and if they wear a mask around others for at least five more days.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm reading a lot of experts are saying it's not a good idea to leave isolation after 5 days without a negative test. The new CDC guidelines do not include a negative test after the 5 days.

The following is an interesting Twitter thread from Michael Mina @michaelmina_lab
(Epidemiologist, Immunologist, Physician).

https://twitter.com/michaelmina_lab/...98522338656266

"CDC’s new guidance to drop isolation of positives to 5 days without a negative test is reckless

Some ppl stay infectious 3 days,Some 12

I absolutely don’t want to sit next to someone who turned Pos 5 days ago and hasnt tested Neg

Test Neg to leave isolation early is just smart"
