A new study out of the UK suggests that people vaccinated with 3-doses (against omicron & delta) have 75% protection against symptomatic disease. (This is not the same as severe disease). Also since the study combined both delta & omicron cases - I suspect the protection for Omicron will be less than the 75% they reported.

https://www.bbc.com/news/health-59615005

Early analysis of UK Omicron and Delta cases showed the vaccines were less effective at stopping the new variant.

Scientists analysed data from 581 Omicron cases and thousands of Delta cases to calculate how effective the vaccines were against the new variant.

However, a third booster prevents around 75% of people getting any Covid symptom.

The UK Health Security Agency said vaccines were still likely to offer good protection against severe Covid that needed hospital treatment.

The analysis is based on limited data, but showed a dramatic drop in effectiveness for the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine and a significant drop off for two doses of Pfizer.

The 75% protection against Covid symptoms after a booster is not as high as against previous variants.

This Twitter thread from Dr. Eric Topol goes into more details about the findings:

A new study out about T cells suggest that there will also be a drop off in protection from severe disease against Omicron - but because much T-cell activity is still preserved, the drop-off in vaccine effectivess for severe disease is expected to hold up better compared to the drop-off for symptomatic disease:

well we have one person posting scientific data and a bunch of people shouting, that's all I see. If you do not agree maybe you should start another thread and keep this one readable for those who care?

*Correction: The protection for symptomatic cases against only the Omicron variant was indeed very close to 75% with 3 doses of Pfizer:

https://twitter.com/EricTopol/status...76759342985216

"The 95% CI presented here with relatively small number of Omicron cases overlap vs Delta, but certainly suggest less protection after 3rd dose.
For Omicron, essentially no protective effect of 2 AZ doses, 3rd goes to 71% (42,86); 2 Pfizer doses to 34%, 3rd doses to 76% (56,83)"

Don't count on Regeneron offering any protection against Omicron.

Looks like Omicron fully evades the REGN mAbs. Same with Lilly. And only one of the two AZ mAbs (just given EUA yesterday) neutralize it. Sotrovimab from Vir going strong against Omicron. Preprint linked below:

B.1.1.529 escapes the majority of SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibodies of diverse epitopes

Keep in mind that as vaccinations increase overall the percentage of breakthrough infections will also increase. However its becoming obvious that with Omicron the percentage of breakthrough cases will be higher - and most breakthroughs will probably be milder. Although IMO the term "mild" is somewhat subjective in terms of symptoms that one experiences.

I also note that as of today Sarasota Memorial Hospital is showing 76% of their covid patients are unvaccinated. This percentage is down from around 85% during the big delta wave. Hard to say if this is because now there are just more people vaccinated - or perhaps some of the vaccinated covid patients might have Omicron (but their samples haven't been sequenced yet).

Most reported U.S. Omicron cases have hit the fully vaccinated - CDC

https://news.yahoo.com/most-reported...182642515.html

Most of the 43 COVID-19 cases caused by the Omicron variant identified in the United States so far were in people who were fully vaccinated, and a third of them had received a booster dose, according to a U.S. report published on Friday.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that of the 43 cases attributed to Omicron variant, 34 people had been fully vaccinated. Fourteen of them had also received a booster, although five of those cases occurred less than 14 days after the additional shot before full protection kicks in.

Among the Omicron cases, 25 were in people aged 18 to 39 and 14 had traveled internationally. Six people had previously been infected with the coronavirus.

Most of them only had mild symptoms such as coughing, congestion, and fatigue, the report said, and one person was hospitalized for two days. Other symptoms reported less frequently including nausea or vomiting, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, diarrhea and loss of taste or smell.

The CDC said that while many of the first reported Omicron cases appear to be mild, a lag exists between infection and more severe outcomes. Symptoms would also be expected to be milder in vaccinated persons and those with previous SARS-CoV-2 infection.

what's the point posting this stuff in the first place? people can talk to their own doctors and get real, documented guidance IF they are interested! what's the motivation here? it's not a medical journal or a clearinghouse from say, the AMA, or the CDC or even the Mayo Clinic !!

Very odd indeed

The rates will go up as it gets colder and darker. This is not rocket science, but then again Covid has become political not scientific.

What are you doing trying to bring common sense here? You will be called a troll and they will have to break out the voodoo dolls

Go discuss your health and healthcare choices and realities with your own set of healthcare professionals for information about infectious diseases, and avoid regurgitated internet chatter, no matter alleged well-intended.

It's not wise to get your own, very personal healthcare directives, guidance or "facts" from any

lay person or group on the internet.

Think! don't be a meshuggeneh.

Merry Christmas
