San Jose does have great weather and the light rail is fun to ride to downtown or to the City.

Our mayor is a vast improvement over the previous one as he has worked to correct the city retirement system making it fair to the tax payers and he actively works for gang supression. Most of the parents I know send their children to private schools as the public ones are disgusting but that is just the cost of living in this area.

Within a one block area at Almadent and Blossom Hill we have a Trader Joe, Whole Foods, and Costco but others prefer the flea market on the east side. To each his own.

The large Vietnamese segment of the San Jose populace surely appreciates this.

You must live in a bad area then. The schools are excellent in the area of San Jose in which I live. People flock to this place for the schools.

And based on the clientele at many pho places, non-VNmese segments appreciate this too.

As far as amenities goes, it's on par or better than anything else its size, even better in some ways than SF. What it doesn't have (for its size) is excitement.

Which school is that? If it exists, I'm sure my neighbors would like to save some tuition money, but they have high paying jobs so their kids can advance.

We keep our doors locked when driving by the schools, especially with the increase of violence in the city.

Japee, maybe you should visit San Jose as I have never seen that. The place on Snell is amost always empty and just driving by people get a good view of the garbage they dump outside.

Almaden. Graystone Elementary, Bret Harte Middle School, and Leland High are all Blue Ribbon schools.

San Jose does have some nice areas in the Almaden Valley, but that are just seems to isolated for me. I know its somewhat close to DT Los Gatos, but its still far from most of the action and you have to drive a long distance to get anywhere. The neighborhoods in SJ that have more action (downtown, Rose Garden, Willow Glen, etc) have terrible schools and they're still not cheap.

For your money, you're better off getting a place in one of the nicer cities in the West Valley. Many of them have lively downtowns of their own, have great schools and are closer to the jobs.

Somewhat isolated and away from "all the action" is precisely why places like Almaden are so attractive to young families with kids.

This. They're more expensive then San Jose for a reason. I bet everyone would rather live in these towns whether they admit it or not. Speaking of Los Gatos and Saratoga which are as safe as it gets and prettier too. Saratoga's downtown is tiny but Los Gatos is 10 minutes down the road. I don't think Cupertino is anything special but schools are good etc.
