The cost of living here is ridiculous.Without a great job you can forget about ever owning your own house. You can only rent rooms from other families or share a place with 15 other people.I just don't understand why so many people love it here.

It has a great downtown core and Santana Row. It also has good warm winter weather. San Jose is the 3rd most fun city in the U.S., according to criterium.

We don't give an F about owning a house.

Who told you "everyone likes San Jose" ? It's a village trying hard to be a town.

Obviously, there's “peace of mind” in San Jose:

Yeah well I guess the cost of living is ok as long as we have warm winters and downtown San Jose is a joke for a city this big.

Oh yay, another new poster here to whine and complain about how miserable they have it.

Who said everybody likes SJ anyways? Most people on these forums (yourself included) complain about it.

Long time residents like myself accept it for what it is: A reasonably safe, "medium-feeling" city set in a scenic natural setting with great weather and is in great proximity to many other great places. People get hung up on this "10th largest city in the U.S." crap and assume it's supposed to be this world class city. For a big city, I find SJ quite pleasant. It's crappy areas aren't nearly as crappy as crappy areas in other big cities and there are actually quite a few very nice places to live. Many people just pass through and what they see from driving along 101 or 880 (to name two of the most unscenic drives through SJ) gives them the impression that all of the city is ugly sprawl.

I'm not going to oversell the city like Durf does...it's far from the 3rd funnest city in the U.S. That's absurd. Actually, one of the things about SJ that's appealing to me is that it's understated and is not a tourist attraction. If you have the means to afford living in a good neighborhood, than you can be very happy here. I grew up in the South Bay and had a great childhood, so part of my bias may just be that I didn't have a bad experience living here.

I find it quite ironic that many of the people who complain about life in the South Bay are transplants. For the most part, they are the ones who created the ridiculous housing costs for the rest of us natives and then they complain about it. My parents have a $600/month house payment and they have a hard time understanding when I tell them that my wife and I plan to leave the area when we're ready to purchase a home.

Oh, and for the record, there are many more expensive places in the Bay Area to live than SJ. SJ actually has more options for affordable housing, compared to many other parts of the Bay Area, just due to its size.

It just depends on your own circumstances. The cost of living is not that big a deal if your house is paid off and you have a good salary.

Which is my situation. I was lucky enough to cash in some stock options a few years ago that completely wiped out my mortgage.

Oh, and I go to San Francisco when I want to "have fun". It's not that far.

Default It's the tech industry

Well, if you want to be in the forefront of technology in an environment that supports starting up enterprises, San Jose is the center for it. You have the people - both in terms of the technical talent, but also the financial support - venture capital, angel investors, etc., and the culture. The people who are attracted by this still come out here despite the high cost of living - or maybe this contributes to it.

It's just like - if you want to go into high finance, go to New York City. If you want to be in the energy business, go to Houston. If you want to be in high tech, go to San Jose.
