Its off the board already. Every bet came in on them leaving in under a year.

Babyboomers:

A flight to Reno from Las Vegas takes an hour and a half.

Spirit Air currently has roundtrip flights from LV to Reno for $41.

A night at one of the Casino Hotels in Reno goes for about $50. An economy rental car in Reno is $35 a day.

So, for a couple hundred dollars, you can fly up to Northern NV for two days/two nights in the next month and take a quick look around to see if you like the general area. If you go on a weekend, your wife can go with you for $41.

If you like what you see, then you can do a longer trip closer to your move to find an apartment already knowing that you want to move to the Reno/Carson City area.

If you don't like what you see on your shorter trip, you can skip the weeklong trip.

That will save you both time (12-14+ hours driving RT to Reno) and money (gas, hotels, food, etc).

You can then put that money and energy towards scouting out someplace else for your next move.

As always, best wishes.

From that you can narrow down places worth the both of you revisiting.
Going alone? Definitely isn't going to happen. We do darn near everything together. And, definitely no camping! We are in our mid 70's, not in our 30's/40's or 50's.

Definitely drive through Fallon on your journey as it is a ranching community. Small and comfy and pretty cute. My in-laws retired there and loved it.

The military flights fly south from the base usually, they avoid the city for the most part.

I would definitely talk to a local realtor for the areas you are interested in as they can steer you into a better location for your lifestyle or budget and the most desirable properties are often rented out without ever hitting the market for you to even look at. Every city can have properties you do not want to live in without knowing that until you move in.

Gardnerville is adorable and more cowboy as well, but very limited rentals there probably twice as expensive to rent than in Fallon :O
Now, what's really cool, we printed out your CD reply from another thread I done. You gave us excellent ideas about the area. Your Reply is on our refrigerator. As soon as I seen it on CD, I printed it out.

Well, we signed a 1-Year Lease, so can't leave before then. So, the "under a year bets didn't win anything". LOL

Thanks RosieSD, but a month after arriving in Henderson (October 2023), we sold our old 2005 Dodge Durango (182,000 miles) and bought a 2121 Dodge Durango GT. We saved enough money to pay for it outright. IOW, no monthly payments at all. It now has 30K on it and is fully computerized/electronic. We LOVE it!

Since we lived in Colorado twice, we don't have to go up there during their winter months. Will be driving up in June. Hotel rooms are more expensive, but that's just the way that is. We will stay in Carson City for a few days and then 10 miles south of Reno for another few days.

We plan on taking our boat out on Lake Mead once. We try and start it on the drive muffs/hose first at boat/trailer storage. If it starts/runs ok, will try to launch it. It will be 8 months since we last started it. Last time on Boyd Lake/Loveland, it ran excellent!

Where we are currently living, almost all airliners, from Vegas International Airport, takeoff right over our apartment complex. We can hear "Red Eye" flights at midnight as well as flights at 5AM or even earlier.

My wife will not drive on the freeways here. Way to many wild/young drivers. I do most of the driving. It is extremely "fast paced" here and traffic is getting heavier and heavier.

Lake Mead Recreational Area, where our boat/trailer is at a Boat/Trailer Storage, is all hills and rocks. No wildlife at all, that we've seen. Lake water level is very low. Almost too low for us to launch our boat.

But, hey, even though it cost us to move here, we found out pretty fast how much we don't like it. The NFR is here for 10 days, before before/after that, it's just "big city". Vegas has around 3 million people and Henderson has almost 300k. Way too many for us.

No camping? Spouse & I aren't as old as you, but we're still camping, good grief.

I still think you should check out both Fallon & Fernley, they are smaller so more quiet & less traffic but still not far from the big city. We had a friend who moved to Fernley & loved it. He had to move for work but would have stayed otherwise.

Your wife can accompany you for $41 on Spirit Air.

LV to Reno is an hour and a half flight. Go on Friday after work. Return Sunday evening. That gives you two full days to drive around the area and see if it's a fit.

Rooms at Casino hotels in Reno start at $40 a night. A car rental is $35 a day.

Total cost for a weekend scouting trip next month:

$82 airfares for 2 people
$80-100 for two nights in a hotel
$70 for rental car for two days

$257, plus meals (you can eat cheap if you stock up on breakfast foods and cold cuts at a local grocery store) and gas.

In two days of driving around, you should be able to figure out if Northern Nevada is worth pursuing (it took you less time than that to rule out Sheridan). Carson City is only half an hour from Reno. Sparks is right next door.

If, during the weekend, you decide Northern Nevada is a match, you can then return for a longer trip right before your move and focus on narrowing a specific location down and finding an apartment. With your history, two visits would help insure this is truly going to be your "last move."

If after your weekend you decide Northern Nevada isn't worth pursuing, you will save 12-14 hours driving RT through the desert in the summer heat, plus a week's worth of travel expenses (hotels, gas, meals)

You can then apply that cash and time to visiting the next place on your list so you can get out of Henderson by next Fall.
