This is a great question.

I think there should be prerequisites to get a marriage license.

-Pass a marriage/relationships class.
-Do some brief relationship focused group counseling.

The expiration date should be every four years. In order to renew the license you must attend a refresher course in marriage/relationships.

Who loves my ideas? !

Well if the license lasted at least till the kids were of age, for families, that would be cool. And for couples with no kids, then maybe a time can be set that both partners can agree on before signing the contract. I guess the laws could get messy, but it would be worth it. And like artsy said, some kind of classes should be offered, like over the internet, and then you just take the test, so if you flunk you get to take it again twice before paying again. Then there would be a limit to how many times you can try per year. It would probably cut down on marriages of convenience and Britney Spears type of marriages.

I saw this on Yahoo News. Someone was proposing that the initial contract for a marriage last seven years, at which time you could either walk away or sign on for another seven. As a news commentator pointed out, you'd still have to divorce for all intents and purposes if you didn't want to renew after the first seven years so it really doesn't solve or change anything.
I agree. There is no just walk away. Couples still have to split assests, agree on child issues, so why have a renewable license.

I think required marriage classes and a waiting period would have more of a positive impact.

(17 - 5 years, 19 - 4 years, 21 - 3 years, 23 - 2 years, 25 - 1 year) Therefore at age 26, there would be no requirement just like age 16 allows one to get a driver's license.

Also, nobody should be allowed to get married during pregnancy or for at least 6 month thereafter. This will avoid more hasty and ill conceived decisions.

These reforms will give people time to get used to the institution and minimize the risks, should they find that they are incompatible.
I will have to disagree with your theory. My Dh and I will hit our 21st anniversary in 12 days. We are both crazy happy and still in love. We got engaged after 3 and 1/2 years(we were extremely young when we met). Our wedding date was set and within a very short time frame our intended year and a half engagement got shortened to 5 months. She is now 20!!

So basically, I would have been unable to marry him at the time....
