But again what can the married man get that the single man can't? No one has ever answered that question
Married men, what does your wife do for you that I can't get from a variety of other women?
Someone to build a life with. It's easier when you have a partner. You can have variety and lot's of different people, but if you want the stability and family stuff it usually means marriage. Someone who will wipe the drool off your face when you're old and feeble, so to speak. We aren't young and appealing and independent forever.
As far as I know, the meaning has not changed over the years. But, considering the couple of cows I bought and there was so little milk, I won't even approach one unless I KNOW the milk is there.
But the saying isn't about being single vs married. It is typically thrown out at the couple who is living together "without benefit of clergy" as my father would say!

I understand what your saying, but I can "Build a life with a partner" without having to get legally married.
Because my answers may not apply to others, everyone has different reasons.
AND, because I have no desire to convince you. If you have no desire to get married, that's a valid choice.
It's not about "convincing" though. It's a simple question and answer, and I've never gotten an answer.(not just from you, from anyone)I'm starting to think it's because the answer doesn't exist, and I'm not the only man that's starting to figure that out

Well, this a drift from the original post, so I'll make this my last on this subject...
Aside from other issues, there are many legal benefits to being married (not talking about alimony here...), for both parties. It's up to each individual to decide what benefits them....
