Hi Folks,
Can't help but to notice what seems like an increase in the area of things taken out of cars, off of stoops, garages, etc in the Wake Forest (and other) areas. It is a fact, that when there is an increase in these types of crimes, it is driven by people looking for things to easily steal with no confrontation, to either trade or sell for drugs. With it harder than ever to obtain prescription opiates, Heroin is on the rise because it is easy to get, cheap, and produces the same high.
I'm not looking for a debate about why people steal, because if one does the research, or asks your local Police Department, you will learn the above. What I'm wondering is, was this always a problem and the media is now picking it up, the news, social media, or is this something that is now becoming much worse? If you have young adults or if you are one, any insight?
I think that the strength of community here is evident and just trying to get some light on what seems like a serious situation in the area.
Yep the monthly Wake Forest town newsletter had an article and steps we're advised to take. I now make sure all cars are locked and the garage door is closed. Also judging from the Wake weekly crime report page a lot goes on that you never hear about.
In my neighborhood, I won't tell which, we have a half way house. Rented by Wake Co and it transitions offenders back into the community. A very nice house. How do I know this? I casually asked a couple of guys and they told me the scoop.

I picked up the Wake Weekly when I visited last month and the back pages have all of the crime and incident reports which I found to be interesting and informative. They even post the names of drivers who got traffic tickets, lol. I like that they post the mugshots for the counties on the WRAL website, with the names of the perpetrators and the crimes they got arrested for. That being said, no matter where you live in this great country you can be a victim of a crime or some sort of other petty theft. Things getting stolen out of cars and off of stoops and porches is nothing new. However, it has gotten more pervasive lately it seems. A lot of people are out of work or underemployed and are looking for a quick score out of an unlocked vehicle or open garage. And yes there are people out there who are addicts who are looking for the pills because it has gotten almost to be impossible to get prescription pain medication. Everyone should just exercise some basic common sense in securing their home and property. Lock your car doors, close the garage door, close ground floor windows, and lock your doors at night. Its a shame but its reality these days.
As the economy gets worse this will increase. That will happen in most areas.
Anything with a locked should be locked.
I would be most concerned with violent crimes vs open car door thefts.
Lots of unlocked cars in the developments that are in rural areas, from what I hear on the police radio scanner.
Also, garage doors left open with well-stocked fridges full of booze, golf clubs, etc. visible from street.

Yep you are giving someone the opportunity to steal that stuff by not securing it. I'm still up here and we recently had a Burglary pattern in our neighborhood. About six to seven houses got hit during the overnight hours and all the homeowners were home. Mind you there was no breaking in. In all cases the back doors were left unlocked or ground floor windows were left open. The perp(s) came in and grabbed wallets, ipads, phones etc..All were quick hits and yes they got arrested coming out of a house at 3am.
I just tell everyone that no matter where you live its the smart thing to lock your car and your home. When your away have a neighbor check your house and have interior lights on timers. A little prevention will deter these people.

This is a recent development for this area. First time in my 12 years living in Wake Forest that I have been advised by town government to lock everything at all times.
