You don't need a puppy in order to "Bond" with your kids. I've had several GSD rescues that all became total "velcro" dogs after bringing them into my home as adults.

As someone who was city-bred (Pittsburgh, right in the city for my childhood), I was raised to automatically lock house and car doors. I wouldn't leave a door unlocked even if I lived out in the country.

Pretty much, no matter where I live, I assume crime can happen if I'm not careful or if I'm unlucky. I do my best to avoid situations that will enable it, if at all possible.

I feel a bit safer here than in my former residence, but all it takes is one incident, you know? People are people and while most are fine, there are scum everywhere. There is no perfect place although some will be safer overall than others.

But that can always change, as people here are seeing.

What is concerning is the types of crimes that are occurring in Wake Forest indicate an increase in drug abuse in your area. Heroin right now has taken over the country, since it is now harder to obtain opioids legally with a prescription, or on the street. Stricter laws solved one problem (making it hard to score prescription pills) so all those addicted turned to heroin. Same class of drug, same high.

I wonder how this has affected neighborhoods there and the high schools. I know what is has done to the high schools where I am moving from. Heroin is mostly used by whites from "nice" or more "affluent" areas. I know what this has done to where I currently live. Every 5 days someone here dies of a drug overdose. I have been unsuccessful on finding death by OD in Wake Forest statistics.

My move is shortly to your area (finally!). I know the drugs are there. I know there is no place in the United States, or the world, I can go to and find NO drugs. What we are hoping for, is a sense of community when we relocate. Where we know our neighbors, we know when something is out of place on our street, we care, we get involved. That is what is seriously lacking from where I am moving from.

You can find statistics because we don't have many deaths at this point...certainly not at the high school level. Yes it's a griwning problem just like the rest of the nation....but thankfully we are behind that curve.

Some local neighborhoods are starting use app called Nextdoor to communicate any crimes and suspicious activity. Our neighborhood watch program is currently evaluating it as a tool for communications and broadcasting urgent text alerts. Seems like a well thought-out app and website.

But for how long? That's the concerning part. With all the recent spikes in petty crime, that is a big red flag.

If you are looking to move to a place with no crime, no drug use, it does not exist. There is less crime here then other areas. I am not sure what you are looking to get out of this thread. You keep bringing everything back to heroin use and while I am not going to deny that there is some it is far from an epidemic. Plus not everyone commits a crime for drugs. Some people steel for the money.

We realize there are not places 'with no crime, no drug use' . We get that. What some of the posters are discussing is the recent change. Reasonable traffic, don't worry if you leave your car unlocked etc in the past now.

There is an uptick but thst doesn't mean the area is unsafe or headed downhill. The only crime in my Wake Forest neighborhood has been some teen boys getting into unlocked cars for spare change. They left laptops, phones and other valuable items. Really do you think they would have if they were desperate for drug money?
