New User--I've never heard of advanced math and reading classes for K. Are you at a special school?
They're being more aggressive with advanced math placement now (not in the past, for sure). My daughter was tested at the beginning of this year and based on the results, she and 3 other children in her grade were moved up an entire year in math. Next year they will be offering 6th grade math as well. And this is a run-of-the-mill traditional Wake elementary school.

I don't know the details, but one or more days a week he is taken out of his kindergarten class (along with 2 other children in other K classes) to meet with a teacher to read more advanced books (i.e., chapter books). They discuss characters, storyline, etc. They are also given homework where they have to read a few chapters in a book and comment on some aspect of the story.

I don't know anything about the math class as we just got the letter of intent and permission slip the other day.
Our school does this now too. It's pull out with a special resource teacher (not related to AG or anything).

This is where doing your homework is crucial. The schools all handle the kids who are ahead differently, and the website will not usually be clear about this. The AG coordinator may be informally pulling young kids out... it has to informal because you are not officially AG until after 3rd grade.

And, as an aside, in talking with the school, I would be clear about my kid's ability... Ex.: "My 6 year old reads chapter books" rather than, "We are from NY, so, of course, we are ahead..."
Now, I am not saying YOU would say this but, I've heard it said, and trust me, AG pull outs & classes have plently of kids from all over!!!! Just like in NY, school quality varies, families vary, kids vary...

No, I don't means she's ahead, gifted all that jazz.....she is going to have finished the first grade HERE IN NYC, but in NC, she would have missed the cut off date. From what I am reading on WCPS on line, its a non issue. So she will stARt 2nd grade just like she would here. Correct me if need be!

Sounds right to me!

In the MA town we lived in it was 9/1 and here it's 8/31 -- so it didn't make a difference for us

You are right, it's a non-issue for you .

It's a non-issue for you. Looking at it in an opposite way, they aren't going to take someone whose cutoff was earlier (say August 1st) and put them in a grade above.

For example, where we lived before, the district cutoff date was August 1st. My son's birthday is early in August. If he had started school here in NC (where the cutoff is later), he would now be in the 8th grade. But he is in 7th grade now because he started school in another state and then moved here in elementary school.

And most schools have the ability to differentiate and challenge your child--whether in math or reading. Just check with your school. Best of luck!
