Right now i am tchr asistant and i plan to move to Cary in about 2 wks. i am a single mom with a 6 yr old and a 10 moth old!
ppl has told me that Raleigh/NC is a good place for tchr jobs b/c of the new growth and stuff. but, i hear that some tchrs loose there jobs b/c of the budgets.
i want to work with wcpss. i dont want to be tchr...just tchr assistant. what is job market like for tchr asisstant? i seen there is hiring freeze...when will that be removed?!?!
if i cant be tchr assistant i might do lateral entry since ppl tolds me that lots of tchrs get job that way.
also, we're going 2 stay at extended stay place until i find job and some place to leave. what are some nice afford neighborhoods in Cary? what school will my child go to?
First, I would look on the wake county public schools website and look at the jobs that are currently listed, then I would start calling the principals in those schools and talk to them, do they have people in mind, when are they planning on hiring, etc. I have no idea where to tell you to live because you could start living in cary and end up with a job in zebulon, and that would be a tough commute!
I think the job situation in wcpss is very tough right now! especially for TA's, at our school, there are only TA's in K and 1st grade, and rarely do those spots open up. I would definitely talk to some people at the actual schools before I moved down here!
I have a friend who just got her undergraduate degree in teaching (in january) and did an internship with wcpss, and she JUST now got a job, not even in wake county, but in vance county!
I am afraid the job outlook for TA's in Wake County is not good! There are a lot of staff, teachers and TA's on terminating contracts. If jobs open up, they will be called first, then folks from the outside will be hired (if any). Unfortunately the economy is affecting the schools as well and while there is growth, jobs are also being cut. Good luck in your move, I would keep my options open if I were you, and apply to some other places besides Wake County.
yes, my best friend has been doing it for years because she truly loves it but the pay is awful and many places have a high turnover. In fact she was looking at finding a different place to work but salaries were much lower than the current place she was working.

thank you!
Hopefully you have enough money to live on for months until you find a job...this is a distinct possibility. Some folks have been looking for a year or more.
Be aware too that family health care in WCPSS is over $500/month + deductibles and copays.
The streets are lined with asphalt here, not gold.
