Are teachers in Wake County eligible for tenure? I finally had a chance to watch Waiting for Superman and was amazed that public school teachers in some areas received tenure after only two years and couldn't be fired.

Other than contributing heavily through taxes, I no longer have a "dog in this fight" regarding the current situation with the WCPSS. I had my third child graduate from the system and generally had no problems with the system. We went the year round route and were fortunate to not be victims of the yearly reassignments.

Tenure in NC doesn't mean you can't be fired, it means that in order to be fired the administration has to follow due process. As I understand it, it's very different than tenure in a union state.

I am a tenured teacher of 17 years, a year away from early retirement as a widow, who's position was eliminated (specialty area license). There are very few positions within the system with no vacancies. My question is....as a tenured teacher with excellent evaluations who has been displaced due to job positiion elimination, can I be terminated and lose my benefits?
