Go out on a night with a full or nearly full moon.
Drop a light overboard.
Wait for the shrimp and scoop them up with a net.
You allowed one five gallon bucket per person.

.From what I understand April thru June is the best time of the year.

Has anyone tried this?

I remember someone, it may have been Frank from Fishin' Franks, tell me about catching shrimp in that manner out at the bridge onto Gasparilla Island. He (whoever it was) said that was the best spot because of the tidal flow through there. Never tried it myself though.
I do remember catching shrimp at Camp Lejeune, NC, where we had a net approximately 4' x 12' with a 4' handle along both ends. We would wade out into water about waste deep. We would pull the net tight between us and walk while "scooping" the bottom. When we would pick up the net we would have bunches of shrimp and an occasional crab or two. I guess that method would be more of a summer thing to do on the the flats.

The process seems pretty straight forward.
Go out on a night with a full or nearly full moon.
Drop a light overboard.
Wait for the shrimp and scoop them up with a net.

Haven't tried it, but Frank wrote an article about it a couple of weeks ago in the Waterline.

I think this artical was about commercial shrimpers plundering Charlotte Harbor during bad weather when they cant get out in the gulf.

I have seen public piers on FL east Coast (Titusville) where the pier had electrical outlets for shrimpers to plug their lights into...

Yes, about half the article was about commercial shrimping in the harbor being a bad idea. As I recall, the other half was how to hang a light off your boat and dip net shrimp yourself.

I was wondering the same thing. That and the billions of gallons of Lake O water. My neighbor went fishing 3 or 4 days ago down towards Boca and said the water looked like sewer water and he didn't catch anything. I wonder if the County tests the harbor water regularly.

Frank, a.k.a. Fishin' Frank, said at the Tues. night club meeting that the red tide doesn't affect the harbor so much as the fresh water coming down the Peace and Myakka Rivers. Not sure if that referred to the area close to Boca too.

Very hard fishing the past few days. I drifted Boca for 4 hrs Saturday without a nibble; poked around the phosphate docks for 2 hrs, same result. There's almost no salt in the harbor - a bucket of shrimp usually lasts a week hanging in the water off my dock - Saturday's shrimp were all dead Sunday. The chatter at Frank's this morning was "nobody is catching anything".
