Clinton visiting; expect delays
Allow extra time Friday in downtown Fort Pierce

FORT PIERCE — Those wishing to travel downtown Friday — when Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton will be at the Sunrise Theatre — should allow extra time, a Fort Pierce police spokesman said Thursday.
Clinton on Sunday announced a campaign stop in St. Lucie County, and on Wednesday announced the event would be 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the 1,200-seat historic theater on South Second Street. Doors for the event open at 9:30 a.m., according to Clinton’s website. She's expected to arrive on the Treasure Coast at the Vero Beach Regional Airport.

It’s the first time a presidential candidate has appeared at the Sunrise Theatre, said John Wilkes, the theater's executive director. Seating for the event, which is open to the public, is available on a first come, first served basis. A ticket is not required. “It obviously is going to be a busy day downtown,” said Ed Cunningham, police spokesman. “We expect a crowd. We expect a large crowd.”

» South Depot Drive between Orange and Boston avenues and Atlantic Avenue between South 2nd Street and South Indian River Drive are closed beginning midnight Thursday.
» South 2nd Street between Orange and Boston avenues will close beginning at 6 a.m. Friday.
» The roads will reopen when Clinton leaves the city.
» Parking is available in the City Hall parking garage, the Second Street parking garage, in curbside parking spaces on open streets and in the Second Street Bistro and Marina Square parking lots.
Wilkes said Thursday he met with Clinton’s advance team Wednesday afternoon.
“They had toured a number of venues in the county and we spent about an hour and a half with them,” Wilkes said. “They toured the building and we got a call about an hour later (about 5:30 p.m.) saying that they’ve selected the Sunrise.”
He suggested that those who want to attend the event arrive very early, noting there will be a security check at the door.
“I’d probably come a couple of hours early just to get a parking space and get to the theater in order to get in line,” he said.
Cunningham said people can expect delays and should plan accordingly. He suggested allowing extra time for their commute.
“The Secret Service is in charge of the whole incident and we are available to assist them,” he said.
Wilkes said the Clinton campaign is paying $2,100 for the facility rental and any extra costs will be added on top of that.
Officials with the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office and Secret Service went through the building Wednesday night, Wilkes said.
“They were back in the building (Thursday) loading in her backdrops.”
He said there is no special treatment for anyone — the rally is not part of the theater season ticket holder package. There is no assigned seating.
A Clinton aide said local and state leaders would speak before Clinton, but it’s not clear who those speakers will be.

JAKE OWEN COMES HOME--COMING OCT 8
Country music star and Vero Beach native Jake Owen returns to Treasure Coast for Beach Town Music Festival

Fresh off TV appearances on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and “The Talk,” Jake Owen is looking forward to coming home to Vero Beach to perform Oct. 8 at the inaugural Beach Town Music Festival. “Anytime I get an excuse to come home to Vero and see my family and play some songs, I’m in.”

The Vero Beach native and fanfriendly star, who picked up his sixth No. 1 hit this spring with the release of “American Country Love Song,” is known for unannounced visits and impromptu performances at some of his favorite hometown spots. The star sightings in the small beach community can cause quite a stir and draw crowds quickly, thanks to social media. Owen said he has no intention of giving up the spontaneity or loyalty he feels toward his hometown fans.
“I love meeting people at the gym, or the Riverside Cafe or Publix. The people back home are really proud of me and really supportive and that’s flattering,” Owen said. “It’s nice to be known as the hometown guy people are pulling for ... rather than the bad guy.”

Owen returns the favor by regularly hosting benefit concerts in Vero Beach. Last year the country crooner changed venues, moving his benefit concert from Holman Stadium to the smaller, more intimate Riverside Theatre. The two shows raised more than $175,000 for the Jake Owen Foundation. Eighty percent of the money stayed in Indian River County.
“As much as people enjoy the big stadium shows, it’s expensive,” he said. “My dad and I talked and we decided to cut back on the expenses and give more to the charity.”

This year’s benefit concert is tentatively scheduled for some time during the first week of December and likely will be at the star’s alma mater, Vero Beach High School.

The Beach Town Music Festival is scheduled for Oct. 7 and 8 at The Indian River County Fairgrounds in Vero Beach and also features Bret Michaels, the former front man for the metal band Poison, as well as The Gin Blossoms and more. For the complete lineup visit www.beachtownfestival.com.
