The Army now will separate mother and child to get bodies to deploy. IMO this is nothing short of an outrage!!!

"Army has mom, Alexis Hutchinson, arrested and 11-month old son put into county foster care system. Alexis has now been ordered to deploy to Afghanistan on Sunday, November 15, where she will be court martialed."

Courage to Resist - Army sends infant to protective services, mom to Afghanistan (http://www.couragetoresist.org/x/content/view/789/1 - broken link)

(one a personal note: the response's to the topic might just tell us all what kind of country we have become. )

She should be seperated from the Army for failing to provide an adaquate family care plan as is her requirement to do so in accordance with Army regulations.

Tough subject. But she knew the rules going into the situation. No sympathy here.

In the end it's the child who is the victim.

No one forced her. She did this voluntarily knowing full well this could have happened.
She doesn't get a "free pass". Sorry..have no sympathy for her.

Isn't this the kind of case that the Red Cross and Chaplain used to resolve? Smells like she has no intention of deploying. No sympathy here either

Deploying is part of her job and she knew it was a possibility. She isn't special because she has a kid.

Did I miss something and the draft was reinstated? No? Well, then this woman signed up on her accord knowing full well that being deployed was a risk. She certainly took the money/education/job training/health benefits that the Army gave her -- but suddenly she is just a 'mom'?

Sorry, but this woman is a poor excuse for a soldier and an even poorer representation for female equality in the armed forces. Shame on her.

It's not all that rare for women to get pregnant to avoid deployment.
It's absolutely wrong of them to do so.

I'll bet there are plenty of folks who would step up and take the child in, and there should be some kind of screened volunteer service for that. Oh wait, that's what foster care is. Well, where is the baby-daddy? I don't know what to say, she consciously got knocked up and had the kid and now is paying the price. Sometimes I think brains should be a requirement to serve in the military.

We'd have some pretty slim pickings if that were the case.
Being pretty intimate with the military, a lot of people use it as welfare.
We all join for our own selfish reasons (including me); very few are altruistic.

On a personal note, by the responses, it looks like we have people that still respect oaths and commitments. That's a good sign.
