There were no vigilantes here...no one took the law into their own hands. They worked out a solution that was acceptable to both the criminal and the victims. The criminal VOLUNTEERED for the punishment...he could have just as likely ended up in jail. Sounds like a win-win to me and I doubt he'll do anything that stupid again. If I was him I'd take that deal too.
No different than if a kid throws a rock through my window, I could call the cops or make a deal for him to work off the debt on my property, mowing lawn, raking leaves, washing car, massaging my feet....
