A national group is offering drug addicts or alcoholics in Tucson $300 if they agree to long-term birth control.

Members of Project Prevention hope their efforts will slow or stop the wave of babies that are born addicted, unwanted or with health problems associated with their mother's or father's substance abuse

Why not offer free vasectomies or sterilizations? It's even better.

Anyway, I think this a great idea.

They said "long term", so maybe that does mean cutting off all future possibilities to have children.

Sounds like the Nazis, but as long as it's a choice.........although, it wouldn't be if you were desperate for booze or drugs and you wanted that $300 - that would be taking advantage of people because of their "condition".

Great idea - such a small investment to prevent so many problems down the line.

But, if their "condition" was so severe that they agree to sterilizaion for $300, what might they do to/with a child for $300? Addict or not it would still be their choice just as continuing to drink and take drugs is their choice.

They did this back when they wanted to sterilize prostitutes in return for money... society wasn't so kind to this idea... they claimed it was targeting black people, the poor, etc. etc... the program stopped... I can see both viewpoints...

Works for me. They should have paid me all those years I didn't have kids. Having children is a very selfish thing to do with the environment falling apart.

I've been a proponent of this idea forever.
I wouldn't mind seeing it extended (and the amount increased) to people on public assistance.

It only works if it applies to ALL women of child bearing age.
