War isn't what YOU want it to be. Russia has its goals, and unlike you, it has leaders who know what the interests of Russia are and know what to do to have the best chance at attaining them.

If they were not engaging in a war of conquest they would not be setting up Russian administrations in the occupied zones, nor kidnapping Ukrainian citizens and deporting them into Siberia. This is clearly a campaign of conquest, Russia intends to annex everything it occupies.
Russia needs to be careful here or the US might get serious about this. And if they WANT to claim we are directly involved, feel free to attack us and find out EXACTLY what being involved looks like. But they wont. At heart they are bullies and cowards.

The Russians have the means to engage in the "shock and awe"-style war that the U.S. conducted in Iraq in 2003. The Russian air force could have bombed major Ukrainian cities no differently than the USAF did against Iraq in 1991. If the Russians were out to destroy Ukraine, or to terrorize the population and to force Kiev to surrender quickly, it would have done this months ago.
The Russians' approach to this war has been methodical, to engage, encircle, and eliminate pockets of Ukrainian resistance. Azovstal was probably the one example of this which the western media cared to highlight.
The Russians have deployed a small part of its military to this conflict. And still, it has captured a substantial part of Ukraine as it is well underway in attaining the goal of liberating Donbass.

LOL. that's actually pretty funny.
Quite a compliment to the Ukrainians, the Russians think that their opponents are super soldiers! How else could it be that the much vaunted Russian Army is getting it's clock cleaned?
The reality is that both armies have a large number of 2nd rate soldiers, the recent recruits and citizen soldiers, but the Ukrainian professionals have been training up to NATO standards with the help of the UK especially, and some other countries as well. They have developed a credible NCO corps and they can think for themselves under the stress of battle.
The development of the Ukrainian military has a long way to go, but it's progress thus far is impressive, and they are highly motivated.
Too bad the Ukrainians are bleeding dozens of men by the day, as Ukraine just repeatedly sends men with barely any training to the front, and with barely anything else other than a rifle and ammunition, where they are easy pickings for Russia's long-range artillery. With what they have, the Russians are winning this war.
And Ukraine is not going to be able to prevent that.
The very serious question here is what could happen if Russia win the war.

Putin is convinced that the soft West will sooner or later decide that its creature comforts, and above all its energy needs and fear of his nuclear weapons, will compel acquiescence.
Can we indefinitely allow ourselves to succumb to a Russian or Chinese nuclear bluff?

The Russian “authorities” in occupied Mariupol have passed a “law” making it illegal for Ukrainian citizens to own property.
At some point the Russian army, previously described as "pathetic, weak, incompetent, clumsy, unprofessional, cowardly, and bumbling" will mutiny.
They will leave their munitions in Ukraine and walk home.
In that post about the ethnic minority battalions they were sending--I wouldn't put it beyond Putin to use this war to try to deal with the problem of the higher birth rate of non-Russians, especially Muslims, in the Russian Federation. Kill off a bunch of ethnic minority males in prime reproducing age.
