Stop your celebrating and fireworks, today is not a new year and yesterday was NOT new years eve.

It is the middle of winter, the new year starts at spring.

Spring is birth, summer is the flourishing, fall is when things start to fall, and winter is the season of death. The new year starts at rebirth, not on some arbitrary month like 'January'.

Many cultures through out history knew this, but Cesar wanted to celebrate the god JANUS which is why he chose the month. It is Roman propaganda, and by extension western propaganda.

The Chinese New Years starts in February or early Spring. Persia (Iran) has Nowruz in March, also thought of as the start of Spring. And the Islamic calendar is similar to the Persian one.

The oldest is the Babylonian who had new years during the March EQUINOX because it was common sense that spring, the season rebirth, is the start of a new cycle.

So why do we follow the Gregorian calendar? Because the Roman way was adopted by the Catholics, who then enforced it on the world by conquering ancient tribes in Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

Look at the countries today that don't celebrate January 1st: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Ye...st_January.png

These countries were not colonized. India was but it was never repopulated.

We have the center of Hinduism, the center of Confucianism, the Center of the Persian world, and the center of the Islamic world. That is pretty much all of the old world except for the Christians who westernized states like Japan, Iraq, Africa, etc. so they too except this illogical conclusion.

January first is the MIDDLE of winter, how does that make sense as a start to the new year? It doesn't make sense. So go home and stop celebrating.

Here in America it's New Years day. Full stop. And an overwhelming majority of Americans couldn't care less whether anybody else likes it or not.

Well if you live in Iran then you can choose not to celebrate it. However this is America.....a western country that traces its traditions and cultures back to Europe. We do things the western way since we are part of western civilization. You will find that Europe, both North and South America and Australia would not question the celebrations of our western traditions. I don’t make a big deal of New year myself but I really don’t understand the reasoning behind questioning our Roman based calendar that we have been using for 2000 years. Makes no sense and it seems more like another attack on western civilization to me.

Using the OP's logic, Americans shouldn't celebrate the Fourth of July because no other nation celebrates it.

If governments can legislate time zones and daylight saving time, then they can also legislate the start of the calendar year. Most governments recognize that the Gregorian calendar is the most accurate solar-based calendar produced, so it's the one used by all but 9 nations.

...

One more thing - Winter 2021/2022 starts with the Winter Solstice on December 21, 2021, and ends with the Vernal Equinox on March 20, 2022. That's 88 days. January 1, 2022 is only 11 days into winter. It is not "the MIDDLE of winter".

The reign of Constantine and Council of Nicaea is what changed it all.
The Roman Empire was able to force the change as you did not go against the empire.

But unless you go off on your own and read about this you will never know.
This stuff is not taught in schools.

Ancient calendars started in March with the spring equinox.

It's COMMON SENSE.

How does the start of the year begin in the middle of winter?

If you ignore tradition for a second, you would see how stupid that is.

Why are you stopping there ? You need to trace it further back to the Roman Empire and even before.
The Gregorian calendar dates back to the 1500's so it's not 2000 years old.

Your argument holds no water. In half of the globe (which is called the Southern Hemisphere), the New Year (January 1) begins in their summer season.
