Many cultures through out history knew this, but Cesar wanted to celebrate the god JANUS which is why he chose the month. It is Roman propaganda, and by extension western propaganda.

The Chinese New Years starts in February or early Spring. Persia (Iran) has Nowruz in March, also thought of as the start of Spring. And the Islamic calendar is similar to the Persian one.

The oldest is the Babylonian who had new years during the March EQUINOX because it was common sense that spring, the season rebirth, is the start of a new cycle.

So why do we follow the Gregorian calendar? Because the Roman way was adopted by the Catholics, who then enforced it on the world by conquering ancient tribes in Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

Look at the countries today that don't celebrate January 1st: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Ye...st_January.png

These countries were not colonized. India was but it was never repopulated.

We have the center of Hinduism, the center of Confucianism, the Center of the Persian world, and the center of the Islamic world. That is pretty much all of the old world except for the Christians who westernized states like Japan, Iraq, Africa, etc. so they too except this illogical conclusion.

January first is the MIDDLE of winter, how does that make sense as a start to the new year? It doesn't make sense. So go home and stop celebrating.
The Gregorian Calendar is the most common civil calendar is existence.

Pagan and religion calendars have long differed.

Rosh Hashana is the Jewish New Year, which dates back to 200 AD and occurs in September.

Some Christian religions formally split over the calendar, Gregorian vs Julian.

Then there are corporate/ national fiscal calendars which may or may not run with the civil calendar.

Think of Imbolc, February 1 (dusk) to February 2, approximately halfway between Winter and Spring, a traditional pre-Christian observance in the British Isles. Also a nod to the Celtic goddess Brid who later became St. Brigid with her day celebrated then, too. (Plus for good measure the Church added Candlemas that day to commemorate the presentation of the Christ Child at the temple. Anything to supplant those danged pagan celebrations.)

Anyway, Imbolc meant "in the belly", meaning the sheep and other cattle were pregnant, so it WAS a time of celebrating new life. It was also the day to pull out your seed stash and start planning your spring garden.

In modern times, it's the day to pull out the groundhog and see how much winter weather lies ahead.

I guess I should have told my Chinese friends who were celebrating New Year that they are going against their culture and should have just gone home and gone to bed at 9 PM.

But perhaps before you post a thread bashing January 1st, you should actually look at some of your "facts".
Chinese New Year NEVER occurs in the spring. It occurs between January 21st and February 20th. If your argument against celebrating January 1st as the "New Year" is because of it being in the "Middle of Winter". You actually have better justification telling people to not celebrate Chinese New Year which is actually in the middle.

The Gregorian calendar dates back to the 1500's so it's not 2000 years old.

The Gregorian calendar is based off the Julian calendar.....2000 years old

It's also celebrated by my fellow Pennsylvania provincials ... as Groundhog Day.
