Spring is birth, summer is the flourishing, fall is when things start to fall, and winter is the season of death. The new year starts at rebirth, not on some arbitrary month like 'January'.

Many cultures through out history knew this, but Cesar wanted to celebrate the god JANUS which is why he chose the month. It is Roman propaganda, and by extension western propaganda.

The Chinese New Years starts in February or early Spring. Persia (Iran) has Nowruz in March, also thought of as the start of Spring. And the Islamic calendar is similar to the Persian one.

The oldest is the Babylonian who had new years during the March EQUINOX because it was common sense that spring, the season rebirth, is the start of a new cycle.

So why do we follow the Gregorian calendar? Because the Roman way was adopted by the Catholics, who then enforced it on the world by conquering ancient tribes in Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

Look at the countries today that don't celebrate January 1st: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Ye...st_January.png

These countries were not colonized. India was but it was never repopulated.

We have the center of Hinduism, the center of Confucianism, the Center of the Persian world, and the center of the Islamic world. That is pretty much all of the old world except for the Christians who westernized states like Japan, Iraq, Africa, etc. so they too except this illogical conclusion.

January first is the MIDDLE of winter, how does that make sense as a start to the new year? It doesn't make sense. So go home and stop celebrating.
It's not the middle of winter, it is the beginning of winter. The Winter Solstice began on December 21, eleven days ago. Doesn't end until March.

For many of the ancients, the new year started when the days began to get longer, so here we are. (Haven't you ever heard of Newgrange, the ancient structure in Ireland that was built so that the light comes in the day of the Winter Solstice?)

Went to look for it for you, and found more than I asked for. Happy Solstice a bit late.

Try to follow along. Warning: Kindergarten-level logic ahead. If the year is 1 and changes to 2, it is a new year, because the year is no longer 1. It changed. It's new. Hence, Jan 1 is a new year, every year. See, how hard was that? Happy new year!

I agree with winter being a time of preparation for new life in nature. Wintertime is when I walk my yard and evaluate the gardens and their structure and decide which plants should be moved and new ones planted in the spring. The spaces are clearer in the winter so I can see how the plants will look better than when all the foliage is present. Besides, a winter landscape has its own special beauty!

Yeah, I agree.
Spring makes more sense for a celebration of a new year.

One small, tiny problem: When the calendar flips over to the first day of spring, the year doesn't change. Hence, not a new year.
Now, one could argue that the Gregorian calendar doesn't make sense, but in the end there is no rule that says that the first day of the year is the first day of spring. That's just one interpretation.
