Speaking personally, the answers are, respectively, "Perhaps", and "essentially yes".
I can't speak for the person to whom you responded, but pretense is operative once we pass from scientific observation to the making of ethical or policy decisions.
It's simple physics, that kinetic energy increases with the square of the velocity magnitude, and that the same reaction-time of a person traveling in a vehicle, means more distance traveled, linearly with increasing speed. That's the science. No pretense there. But to then assert, that for scientific reasons we ought to lower highway speed limits, in the interest of safety - now that is utter pretense.
Huh? What does any of this have to do with price of tea in China?

Actually thats not true. You know that....right? Studies say it helps protect you a little-I cant recall the exact number, but its around 20% or so.
But it protects others far more.
And if both people are wearing one its even more effective.

You can find studies that say absolutely anything. And if someone puts forward the money, a study can be purchased that concludes whatever the funder desires the conclusion to be.
The purpose of these masks is not to protect the person wearing it, as I believe you know very well.

Was in the Carolinas last week, a lot of people not wearing masks. Nobody is going to listen to a President, no matter who they are. Many of these people live day to day, they got no time for mask-wearing.
