Oh and FWIW I'm not at all suggesting that such an invasion would occur now , in fact I'm of the opinion that such an invasion would ( at best ) occur in about a generation's time , if it does occur at all that is .

Nukes are strong deterrence against an outright attack and we have plenty of them. Read up on Mutually Assured Destruction. However, that does not stop the enemy from hurting us economically, culturally, etc. China understood this and even wrote a book on the subject. They have been waging a war on the US for sometimes now.
